Just joined HL stocks & shares ISA. Need clarification on a few points.
a/ the investment limit in this tax year is £10,680, is this in addition to the cash ISA i have for this year (£5200)?
b/the HL funds are valued every day at 12 noon, is this the same for all the funds HL offer?
b/ if it's been a poor morning for the FTSE 100, can i deposit £1000 and buy into a tracker fund at, say, 11am and that money will go into the fund at 12 noon? And the value of the fund will reflect the falls on the FTSE 100 in the morning....or is the fund reflecting the previous days FTSE levels?
c/same as b really, but foreign funds, say Asian. Does the 12 noon valuation reflect the previous nights trading which would have closed only 5 or 6 hours ago?
Thanks

a) No the allowance is £10,680 MINUS anything you have put in Cash ISA.
b) No, funds don't work like that. Funds update once a day.
c) No you will buy at prices at the morning, whatever that may be.0 -

Just to clarify, the total ISA allowance this year is £10680, of which up to £5340 (not £5200) can be in a cash ISA with the remainder in a S&S ISA.0 -

Not with the types of investments HL offer. You would need a more advanced platform for that.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -
As far as I can tell, at HL you have to have your fund purchase/sale request in by 8am in order to be executed at noon. After that, it will be held over until the next working day. (That's online - don't know if it's any different by phone.) Then for most funds the transaction will take place at noon's price. So you can't wait to find out what the price is going to be.
(For a US index tracker, while the fund is priced at noon, I believe it will be based on the previous day's closing price, though perhaps with latest exchange rate. Not sure about that either.)0 -
Why did you make a new thread about this? These are issues you should ask their customer support not a third party forum.
It makes no sense to make a thread asking detailed questions about a provider on a third party forum of which the provider can easily answer.
Looks like SPAM to me, seeing a lot of these 'HL.....' threads on here as of late.0 -

Then why would this forum exist if everything was easily available from every provider?
The reason HL is mentioned a lot if because most of the regulars use them, so recommend them, not rocket science is it?
The user also joined in March 2009 - which indicates its not likely to be spam.0 -

If you were to use an ETF or investment trust you could do live dealing on those at any time when their market is open, just like share dealing. HL will charge you 0.5% a year to hold ETFs or investment trusts, capped at £45 or so total for the ISA account.Tom_Pickering wrote: »same as b really, but foreign funds, say Asian. Valid questions, still can't figure out the answers :money: Well, these are supposed to be LONG TERM investments. I'm mostly short term.0
-
Some funds have longer dealing times: I know one where the dealing is only once a week (on a Wednesday). As a secondary effect it looks a smoother ride because it's only priced once a week too.
FWIW I made a buy order of some European and American funds on a Thursday evening about 10 days ago on HL's website. Order actioned on Friday morning, but took the prices from 8am Monday morning. Which meant that I caught the dead cat bounce from the US Congress debt agreement0 -
I have never owned a fund. If the markets are volatile is a fund proportionately as volatile as a share or do they move more slowly Was wondering because with an investment trust (not that I have owned one of these either), the price you see when you trade is what you get.
Also with an ETF tracker in say the ftse as opposed to a tracker fund
Would, in each case, this transparency of sale price be worthy of any consideration when deciding what investment to go for if you are looking at mirror or near mirror investments?0
