Thank you, but can you briefly say why for the ftse all share which doesnt havethe risks of some ETFs - I do want to learn

I think that I do want an ETF this time (flexibility of timing appeals - I like the transparency of what I get if I sell) but I don't know what I should be buying is it i-shares via a normal online broker (I use x-o) . I know that with a tracker I would prob go with HSBC but I dont know whaat is what with the ETF for ftse all share or even if there is one!

    Thanks for all the help

There are some All Share ETFs but the ones that I am aware of are synthetic, i.e. they use derivatives to produce the return. And the counterparty to the derivatives is the parent institution that owns the provider. Probably best to go with an OEIC in this instance unless you are thinking of short-term trading.
Living for tomorrow might mean that you survive the day after.
It is always different this time. The only thing that is the same is the outcome.
Portfolios are like personalities - one that is balanced is usually preferable.

You tend to find the ones which are not synthetic have higher charges and underperform the UT/OEIC versions.

Is that worth it for the ability to trade during the day rather than once a day?

    a) No the allowance is £10,680 MINUS anything you have put in Cash ISA.

    b) No, funds don't work like that. Funds update once a day.

    c) No you will buy at prices at the morning, whatever that may be.

Just a side note on point B, most funds update daily, some can update once a week. I held a US mid-cap fund, which was only once a week.

no, I am sure you are right, its just that I have only ever held shares and have got used to the transparency of pricing. Anyway I dont think there is a ftse all share etf so will have to go with the tracker anyway.
