Cars and Petrol

Has anybody else on here had a raw deal dealt them when it comes to travel costs? Maybe lost their car or their petrol allowance slashed? Just debating it on another thread I started but thought I would start this thread so you can share your experiences. My situation is I live 4 mins from work but have to ferry my kids around from after school club and also my partner lives 26 miles. We do intend to move in together later in the year however. It would be a damn right inconvenience if I lost my car, although it is only worth around 200 quid so don't envisage that, but my petrol allowance is likely to take a hammering from the OR it seems.

Why is it a raw deal, you want to go bankrupt, so unfortunately sacrifices have to be made.

that was a bit harsh...true but harsh

the OR wont see petrol costs to see your partner as essential...so try and work out what you 'really' need your fuel for..anything else is a luxury us Br types dont have :-)

Yeah it was a bit harsh and I do realise that's the way it is, maybe I'm just pi**ed with the world as I'm not in this situation necessarily because of something I have created!! I won't bother asking any further questions on cars and petrol lol.

i agree, im deffo not here because i want to...things often happen that we cant control...me, it was my ex who contributed mostly to my situation...we split up because he wanted more !!!!!! on his chick!! how are you meant to think about debt when thats going on!! id dearly love to keep the car for both me and my 4 year old daughter...but its not up to me, i just hope they are considerate when i have my OR interview in the next 2 weeks. car needs 150 quid spent on it asap before it completely breaks, i just got told that it was up to me to get it fixed without knowing if i can keep it...not helpful but we are meant to be going camping in wales next week on our only holiday of the year so im tempted to get the car fixed and taking the chance...dilemma city!

lala9, nothing is ever straightforward eh? look on the IS website and trawl it for info re fuel and vehicles regarding br...there is stuff on there that might help! and dont stop asking questions!! :-)

Thanks Saza, just feeling rather delicate at the mo. Sorry to hear about your !!!!!! ex partner, sounds a lovely character and similar to mine. Your situation sounds uncertain and that's what I don't like, fancy telling you to get it fixed without knowing you are going to be keeping it, but I hope you get the result you want and enjoy your holiday. And you are right nothing is straight forward lately it seems :-(

If your car is only worth £200 they wont take your car its over a certain amount I think its about £1500 thats fact it was done to a close friend of mine. I know I'm about to have a earbashing but if it helps ease your mind i'm up for it.

    Ummm no..your wrong im afraid.

The OR will state quite clearly..do you need the car for work..if no he will tell you your not entitled and will make arrangements too take it or offer for you too buy it back.

Unless your working or actively working they have the right and often do take the car..even when it costs them money (work that one out..)...spoken at length too OR and he states the law is the law even if it doesn't make sense.

i got told limit of value for a car was 2 grand...last week, so fairly recent?

they wont have an 'intrest' in the car as an assetm, but its getting the allowances to keep it....Lala, what stage are you at?

Well as far as I can tell when I was looking into this (and its very difficult to find info on this) the actual allowance for petrol isn't the problem. Sometimes they don't bother with the cr and sometimes they do. The main thing I think you have going for you is the value is low. Although this isn't a determining factor in keeping the car if you were the OR is it worth the hassle to realise two hundred quid? Actually it wouldn't raise that as there would be costs to selling it...

My main concern, and I'm not being funny here, would be regarding the safety of the vehicle.

Even if you aren't working I'm sure I read something about it can be exempt if they believe having the car would make it more likely that you would find work.
