Not just the 50s and 60s. When my parents bought their 1930s semi in the mid 1970s one of the first things they did was to box in the staircase spindles (which they then painted rather than wallpapered) and to cover the lovely original internal doors with sheets of hardboard. Seems my mum thought it was 'more modern' - and would cut down on the dusting.0 -
