    Fine by me!

"OK Mr Squirrel, the Housing Department is able to offer you a generous choice today; Grimsby, or the scenic Rhondda valley!" :D

Possibly an element of state control might help - as in stopping what is happening at the "top of the tree" - ie London house prices being so high because of "investment" by foreign buyers (as well as those that live in London anyway buying our homes as homes).

Followed by the knock-on effect of those actually intending to live in London being priced-out of the city into nearby areas - which then knocks on into those in the nearby areas being priced out - which then leads to them moving to, say, the West Country. That then leads to West Country people being priced out of our own areas and so on (a subject rather close to my own heart personally - as someone that got priced out of my own area).

....and...yes....nothing will ever be done....if we just "shut up and put up".

To stand any chance whatsoever of "righting" something first it has to be "named" (as we can see going on right now in a couple of very different contexts - ie Harvey Weinstein are you reading right now?).
  • I grew up in St John's Wood but I can't afford to buy a house there. I am entitled to stay in the area and therefore the state must arrange this for me.

Re the buying up of apartments and houses by foreign investors....surely it would make sense that all empty property should be punitively taxed by government? Make them not viable for simple investment purposes? Or have I got it wrong?

Yes, you were so 'priced-out,' you took the equity in your home and moved hundreds of miles to a cheaper area, thus helping to push up the prices for the locals there! :naughty:

    And I did similarly. :o

We could have both stayed where we were, but market forces determined our actions.

I'm not suggesting a total free for all. I understand the need for some government intervention. After all, I'm a shareholder in a community land trust that seeks to provide low cost housing for local people who can't afford to buy.....probably because of demand created by people just like me. :rotfl:

You lucky thing! I was born near the Angel Islington, and we all know how rubbish that is to own on the Monopoly Board. :(

I always tried to buy that set - possibly early evidence of my total lack of financial ability. But in real life rather than Monopoly Islington is now mega expensive.

Yes, besides being mine, it was the birthplace of 'champagne socialism' too. :undecided

Very thin pickings on the Rightmove front tonight. After 1/2 an hour I can only come up with an easy Spot the Dog, albeit quite a pleasant pooch.

I think we had a spate of these at one stage, but there's always room for one more.

Perhaps, like Hilary Clinton, he discovered his Welsh roots and staged his death so that he could relocate quietly to Wales and forever escape the pressures of Graceland. If that was the case, he'd be 81 now and about ready to downsize to a nice McCarthy & Stone in Mumbles....

    Just saying....
