  • Check your meter while you have everything on that's normally on, how fast is it clocking up the units? check using your aga and with it off, try to determine what exactly is using the most gas. If you can't suss it out then definitely speak to your supplier, £836 is scandalous, glad you're keeping your sense of humour!

So this was estimated bill (obviously)

Does your meter measure ft or m?
On the bill the present reading is 9550
What is the previous reading xxxxx (you said (below) this was an actual)
What is the total kwh for this latest bill?
What was the reading on April 7th?

What I don't understand is they have estimated it correctly and yet it is a HUGE amount of gas, so how did they estimate it correctly if your previous bills have not been as much? My logical answer is that you have just moved in and this is your first bill. and previous tennants also got huge bills.

How long have you been there?

Surely Wig's question is the most important one. Sorry PoochyChoo, but until you answer that question, it is difficult to have sympathy for you. If you use the average amount a year, 19000kWh) then you would be looking for a bill of around £450. So what period id the bill for? if it is say dor two years supply then it is not IMO excessive. As to your abilty to pay it would seem from your OP that you have not made any provison in your budget and wuld have been caught out what ever the amount. I apologise if I have misread you, but acting like that is not the way of a repsonsible person
  • moved in on 7th April 2006... so not first bill.. first bill was £346 in september (not estimated) this bill is for the last quarter.. i pay quarterly...

    add meter readings later

Ok after providing the info I asked for above (now updated) I would try phoning the supplier and asking for a history to be read to you over the phone. Previous billing dates with meter readings and whether or not the reading was est or actual. Go back a couple of years (if they cooperate). The data is not personal so it won't come under DPAct.

I'm still amazed they have been able to accurately assess what your increased usage would be (Sept - Dec) based on a figure of £300 for April - Sept.

Is your boiler incredibly old and inefficient? Edit: ahhh the Aga I missed that Watch the gas meter dial when you turn on the Aga, I'm not familiar with them myself.

When you have provided the details, I'm sure Ebico @ 2.55pence per kwh will be one of the best if not the best deal for you. Also "Scottish power - Lloyds TSB" will be a bit cheaper than Ebico but I am not aware of the eligibility criteria.
