Taking the plunge Daiken Altherma HT

  • Thanks for the link Cardew - our boiler is listed as 70% efficient in these tables which makes me even more sceptical of the 85% on the service printout - maybe it means it is 85% of 70%? If so then effectively 60% so 15,300 to 18360 kWh.

It snowed this morning and a careful study of the roof suggests there is work to be done on insulation ... it is better than our neighbours but they've got old houses too.

I installed a Daikin Altherma HT unit 16kW to replace the oil fired heating we installed when the house was built. The oil fired system worked a treat but was getting on for 15 years old so we opted to have an ASHP installed. We have underfloor heating throughout the property.
So far it has not been the best, when the temperature goes down to -15 as it did last yer you might as well shut it down as it generates no heat, even after defrosting the ice build up. The biggest issue we have is the electricty bills last year £2500 this year £3600, neither economic to run or energy efficient. Having paid £16000 to have it installed just adds to the feeling that this is not a technology that has been fully proven.

So what does your installer say? I take it you queried the crazy high £2.5k bill in your first year? What did the £16k include?

Everything is relative. A single 900 litre tank of oil will cost £600 nowadays, and this might only last a month in deep winter on a large poorly insulated house with an old oil boiler (I know:eek:), so a £2.5k or £3.6k annual electricity bill for all electricity, water and heating would be a significant saving!!

I've just paid 55p a litre including VAT, so if you are paying 67p then you need to ring around more.
