Can someone explain to me why my brand new TV with integral Freeview and my two year old Panasonic HDTV with integral Freeview will only pick up around half the available channels via the current aerials?

Sounds like you're in a poor reception area and possibly need a "medium" or "high gain" aerial to receive all the channels.

As stated by a poster earlier, there is no such thing as a "digital aerial" but some are narrow band, some wide band etc.

If you're area hasn't changed to digital only yet, remember that when they do, the digital signal strength is increased by around x10 so your current aerials may be sufficient.

Edit: quality of the coax and plugs can also be a factor.

Whereas I can happily pick up all available digital channels from a 10 element aerial hanging pointing downwards on a wall on the end of the coax lead with a huge tree with wonderful foilage and part of the side of a house in the way. .. About 400mtrs - if that -from the transmission tower... (Cow Hill, Fort William).

Must see one day what happens with just a bit of wire..

Someone told me once, when they were living in the shadow of the Burntisland transmitter, that they got perfect picture and sound by merely touching a finger to the aerial socket on the back of the TV.....

We're already changed. Our analogue went out in November last year, IIRC. I'll try a re-tune to see if either aerial picks up more channels.
