Internet connection problems - Help!

I have several laptops and hand held devices including iPhones and the like that all connect wirelessly to my home server / router. They all work perfectly. There is a desktop in my home office too. I have a new Dell lap top which was working perfectly until last week, and whilst it now connects to the internet, allows me to use and receive/send e-mail through Office Outlook, updates my Avast protection software and my iTunes software etc, I can't get it to connect to the www with either IE or Mozilla!, although it did so previously.
Did all the usual; run, cmd, ping back etc - getting pings back including to google.com but when I try either of the ipconfig commands (release or renew) it says "No operation can be performed on Wireless Connection 3 while it has its media disconnected".
What do I need to do; I feel this is going to be something really simple and I'm going to look really stupid!! but all the Media devices seem to be on and working!

  • I'm not sure what I was looking for on that thread.

the offending laptop is a Dell Inspiron using Windows 7.

Like i said it is clearly connecting to the Router, allowing e-mail through Outlook and upgrading all other programmes, it just won't let me into the www via IE or Mozilla!:(

Has the connection settings got messed up in Ie and FF? check the connection settins in both programs respectively, perhaps some nasty has rejigged these somehow?

    Winsock reset http://www.top-windows-tutorials.com/winsock-reset.html might help

No again I'm afraid; if i use the IP address of a website I can get there but of course I only know the IP of two sites!!
  • Thank you all for your help & assistance. Eventually got there.

    |fter 4.5 hours on the phone with a 3 different Dell operatives, it seemed to come down to a change in my anti-virus software, although I'm not sure that they actually know what they've done; it's recommended I change my anti-virus software but i have several laptops & computers in this household - all have Avast AV and this is the first time I've ever had this problem! This is the only laptop with Windows 7 however ........

Anyway it's working and that's the main thing.

    Thanks again for your efforts!
  • Thanks also got some ideas from the thread
