    I think there's still a ladder, if:

    You're willing to be realistic
    You buy somewhere that suits your needs (no spare rooms for the sake of it)
    You buy somewhere cheaper than you can afford and overpay

    But yes, the days of couple consisting of a dinner lady and a policeman ending up in a £500k house do seem to be over (bar generational transfers)

    I have to say I don't plan to climb the ladder, essentially we are going to skip the first few rungs and go straight to a 3 bed semi and live happily ever after.

    Really? I'd consider moving to a detatched at some stage after this, personally.
