What happens when my contract expires with vodafone?

My vodafone contract finishes on the 16th August, I have not had any communication from them but then I did ask them to not call me with offers.

I want to upgrade to a smart phone and will be looking at websites such as mobiles.co.uk, phones4u etc. Anyone recommend any others? My OH used a company called buymobilephones.net and had to wait ages for the phone to be delivered, is this typical of these sites?

So how do I go about this? Get my PAC code first or get a phone deal? On the 16th - what happens, my new phone just works with my number?

Also I'm currently on vodafone, if I find a new vodafone deal I like through a discount website, can I still keep my existing number?

Anything else (like do I have to give notice to vodafone that I will be leaving? what happens if I don't find a new deal by the 16th, do I go onto some kind of rolling contract with vodafone?)

Thanks

Be cautious with redemption deals. Make sure you know what your are doing.

You have to give 30 days notice of cancellation. If you have not done this yet you'll have to pay Vodaphone at least until the 4th of September even if you swithch to another provider earlier. The PAC lasts for 30 days and your contract gets terminated when another network ports the number on your request. IMO, it is easier to get a new contract first, then port the number.
Also I'm currently on vodafone, if I find a new vodafone deal I like through a discount website, can I still keep my existing number?
You cannot do this directly, but you can you port the number in two steps - via another network PAYG sim.

Your contract does not expire. When your minimum term ends, you go onto a 30 day rolling contract on the same terms, with 30 days notice.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Hi, if like me Vodafone coverage for north of Scotland is important, you might want to look at Talkmobile which uses the Vodafone network. They seem to have some really good deals at the moment too. I'd like to keep my current number too and it doesn't seem as complicated as I thought. Vodafone did confirm to me this morning that contract will expire thirty days from when I notify them that I want to leave, so email send 6 Aug would mean contract ends 6 Sept (my 12 months is up on 31 Aug).
