Can a handbag be my hang luggage on a RyanAir flight?

I need to fly from France to London next month with RyanAir (yes, RyanAir, call me mad), and want to know if a handbag can be my actual hand luggage on a flight? I have googled, and people have asked if they can have a handbag as well as a 'cabin bag', and usually that they get told to put their handbag inside their hand luggage bag.

Never taken luggage onto a flight before so I'm not too sure. I've looked on their website, but there's no definite answer.

It's only a small bag, and I only need to put a few light bits in.

Apologies if this has been asked before.

Thanks, Charlotte.

EDIT: And also, is it fine to pack my laptop into my suitcase too? It doesn't have to be in my hand luggage does it?

You would be taking a risk putting a laptop into hold luggage. Hold luggage gets bashed around and some of it goes missing. Do you have a small case that could you could put your handbag and laptop into?
  • Ty you two.

I may well do actually, got plenty of time to be able to buy a new one if I don't so that's all sorted really ;)

    Thanks very much :D

Hand baggage can be anything as long as it meets the size and weight restrictions so a handbag would be fine.

Be aware that your laptop would not be covered by travel insurance if it was packed in your hold baggage.

You can use a supermarket plastic bag to hold handbag & laptop.
  • Ah even better then. Thanks alanrowell.

Ah,but, when the handbag shoulder strap is measured it could be more than 55cm.

If you go into cancer research (or probably any charity shop) you can get a cotton/canvas bag in various designs for around £2.99. This will be perfectly adequate to hold your laptop and handbag, and will be sturdier than a plastic carrier bag.

Alternatively, if you have a carrying case for your laptop, put all your handbag essentials into the pocket of the laptop bag and pop your handbag in your suitcase till you get to the other end.

Another thing worth considering is a money belt or bum belt for your passport and immediate money needs - they don't count as a handbag and you can have this in addition to your hand luggage.

    Enjoy your trip!
