Have you selected the highest burning speed in Nero that your media and drive can handle?

If the file you have downloaded is a single large file that ends with .iso or .img then I would use Imgburn, which is free.

It's not the program as such, which determines the speed it burns, its your dvd burner and the dvd blanks, I have a 16X burner and use 8X blanks, so it takes roughly 15 mins to burn a disk, if I was to use 16X blanks then it would be roughly 8 or 9 minutes.
  • are you simply trying to burn something onto a disk, if so its just your dvd rw speed.

OR have you downloaded a movie and also have to encode it at the same time as burning. if your having to encode it one-two hours for a full moive is quite good

To pick up on cookie_monster's second point - your encoding speed is quite good - there are a few ways to decrease the time taken. The most expensive is to buy a superfast PC and/or overclock your current PC - this will mean your PC will do more work (encoding) in less time. Although this option is not for the faint-hearted (or light-walletted!)

There are various options in Nero 7, when you add the video file, go to "video options" at the bottom of the window and you can change the quality settings on the transcoding section. This may lessen the quality of what you see on your television, but depending on the quality settings you use (you can even try a custom bitrate setting) and depending on your home cinema set-up, you may never notice the difference. Also, you may wish to automatically encode only in 2-channel stereo, as using 5.1-surround option eats up more processor cycles (again, if you don't have a surround-sound setup at home, this makes more sense/saves more time)

Failing that, you can try different software, as suggested above. However, from personal experience, I have found that Nero 7 Premium Reloaded gives the best results, when you weigh up both time taken to encode, and the quality seen in the video/sound (graininess/jitter/jaggies/etc...)

    Hope that helps.
  • I don't want to copy a DVD, I have for example a film that ends .avi when I drag it into nero, it takes about 2 hours I think it encodes it first.
Is there a quicker way of encoding it?

Converting the avi file to dvd will take quite a while regardless of which product you choose to use.

You might want to try an alternative for the conversion process, such as Avi2Dvd which is free. http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAvi2Dvd.html

This might be quicker than the time it takes Nero to do a similar job. Once completed you can choose to burn the dvd with Nero as normal.
