Fed up with card readers

Not all of them use them in the same way though.... Barclays it is required to log in and then again to make payments to new payees where as with Natwest you dont need it to log in or make payments to accounts you've paid to before but do need it to add new payees.
I find them a pain in the !!!! too and find Barclay's use of it on their mobile banking the most impractical thing ever even if you do remember to have the damned thing with you0 -
Llloyds utilise your telephone instead of a card reader.
For example, if I set up a new payment recipient, they will automate a call to my mobile to confirm a passcode - very efficient, takes no time at all and no need to carry around a reader!
And, because it's not text-based, this works on a landline too, which for those of us without mobiles is way more sensible and workable than, for example, Santander's one-time passcodes which are texted.
My main account's at Natwest and TBH I don't have a problem with the card reader. I'd rather it wasn't necessary at all, but it's no real hassle. But then I don't need it in more than one place... though it wouldn't matter if I did, as I have about 8 spare ones (sent by them and various others). It would drive me nuts if it was required for every log-in like some other banks.
I've never been issued with one from Halifax either -- didn't know they used them.~cottager0 -

Look for an option on your Barclays internet banking called "set up basic access" or something like that. I think it allows you to set up a password that you can use to get some limited functionality without having the card reader with you (e.g. check your balance and recent transactions, make a payment to an existing beneficiary).0 -
Stupid things, they REALLY annoy me. More none recyclable plastic.
I really do think that free TEXT message verification would be the best option.0 -

When Barclays first set up internet banking I had 3 business accounts with them and a personal current account, all of which went on to internet banking. I closed the business accounts several years ago when I retired but internet banking still regards me as a business rather than personal banking customer, tries to flog me credit cards and new business accounts etc. but also won't let me set up 'basic access' because this is only for personal banking customers!
I've tried to sort this out to no avail. The internet banking helpline tell me it's nothing to do with them and to speak to the bank. The bank says I'm not a business customer so it's nothing to do with them either. So I'm stuck with using the card reader every time.
Seems if you've ever been a business customer with internet banking access it stays there for all eternity!0 -

Thus preventing a proportion of the population from using internet banking?0 -
Thus preventing a proportion of the population from using internet banking?
The HSBC security key prevents a proportion of the population from using internet banking - those of us who are unable to have one without losing it whenever we require logging in to Online Banking. It is the biggest pain and it is so frustrating that they can't come up with a secure login system that doesn't require any extra paraphernalia.0 -

You can send texts to landlines.
Though I have an account that does the text confirmations and I've now lost easy access to my money in it. My address and mobile number have changed but to change my address on the system, I must get a text to the mobile, and to change the mobile number, I must receive a letter at the address!0 -
Logging in with Nationwide is by card reader, but you can still sign in using memorable date.
Using the card reader is supposed to be more secure though.0 -

Santander won't. If you try to put a landline number as your mobile in your personal info it rejects it.0
