Fed up with card readers

Options
Everyone is supplying them now & it's just more junk to remember to carry with me, I work away & travel a lot & would like to be able to log on from wherever. I've been doing internet banking for many many years without a problem.

Are there any banks left now that aren't issuing these things?

I have current accounts with First Direct, Santander and Halifax which don't require the card readers.

I'm with Halifax and they have issued me with a card reader. Pesky things.

The only good thing about them is the fact they aren't tied to the 1 card and you can interchange them.

Santander are going for text message codes instead AFAICS. Presumably require expensive roaming to be turned on. Or does the sender always pay?

And HSBC are going for card readers - whether First Direct will follow is an open question.

Really? Im with them, and havent got a card reader, they ask for my password when setting up payments etc.

I have a card reader with Natwest, but its only required when setting up new payees, and making the first payment. Havent used it for ages
Debt free and staying that way!
  • Lloyds TSB don't issue card readers. I have one from Nationwide which I only use occasionally & one from Tesco Bank which I no longer need as I closed my savings account.
  • Apparently, First Direct are following the rest of the HSBC group with the sh!tty little keypad thing, and will issue them to customers in the next 12 months. Grrr!

Llloyds utilise your telephone instead of a card reader.
For example, if I set up a new payment recipient, they will automate a call to my mobile to confirm a passcode - very efficient, takes no time at all and no need to carry around a reader!
