MSE News: DVD to computer copying to be made legal

The next logical step would be to make it illegal to prevent people copying products they have bought. After all if it is ok to transfer your DVD to your Ipad then what right would the sellers have to put DRM on that prevented it?
Actually there is a move in the right direct with the group setting up "UltraViolet" DRM which does let you make copies. See "What is UltraViolet and why should you care?" for more info.0 -
Fair Use has some legal legs in the US. The UK can't do anything in isolation from the EU hence the story is just wishful thinking and proposals designed to fill a slow news day.
I always rip my DVDs to hard disk before watching. It takes 5 minutes. I delete the copy after viewing. Playing a disk for two hours will reduce the life of a laser diode in the playback device.
Teachers should be warned that reading aloud from a copyright covered book to school children could be viewed as an act of copyright theft. Obtain permission where possible.

Nope! Copying a DVD to your PC is still illegal!
It's not covered under this law,
Copying Audio from a CD to MP3 does not require you to break any DRM.
But Copying a DVD to AVI . MPG or even .ISO, requires you to break the DRM (Encryption) which is still Illegal!!Laters

You can copy a DVD to your PC with DRM intact but this is probably useless for your target device.
But yes breaking the DRM on a DVD is still illegal but so easy to do.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

It's the internet! get used to misleading headlines... ^_~
The Law only applies to Audio CD's
Looking at the report summary it says (my bolding):The UK has chosen not to exercise all of its rights under EU law to permit individuals to shift the format of a piece of music or video for personal use and to make use of copyright material in parody. Nor does the UK allow its great libraries to archive all digital copyright material, with the result that much of it is rotting away. Taking advantage of these EU sanctioned exceptions will bring important cultural as well as economic benefits to the UK.

If you disagree where are you getting your info that it only applies to Audio?0 -
As I say it will be fine to copy a DVD/Blu-ray to your PC, but to get past the DRM and re-encode may still be a problem.Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017
