HTC Wildfire 18m contract

My teenage son's contract is due for renewal, & I am ideally looking for one with cashback by redemption, having managed this successfully for the last 18m. He "needs" 400mins, unlimited texts, 500Mb data, over 18 months, & would like a Wildfire. He's not bothered which provider he uses. Has anyone got any suggestions how best to do this? I was wondering if it might work out cheaper to buy an unlocked handset & then get a cheap contract with a basic phone which gives the contract he wants. Is there anything to watch out for with this approach? Does it affect the contract if you change the phone? Thanks for any advice from the experts!

Prolly better on 3 payg, £15 gets you 300 mins, unlimited data and 3000 texts, handset £100.
Total £370 /18= £20.55 per month, so that is the target monthly for a contract with the same handset for 'free'.

300 minutes contracts are available for 18x£0.00 by redemption with a basic handset (400 minutes for 24x£0.99): http://www.moneysupermarket.com/mobile-phones/brands/nokia/1800/

Unlocked PAYG Wildfire is available for £129.89+£10: http://www.dialaphone.co.uk/pay-as-you-go/o2/ with £6.56 TCB cashback.

For 18x300 minutes the total cost after selling the unwanted phone and sim with £10 credit for £15ish is about £110, i.e. about 18x£6.
