From a strictly legal perspective you do of course have a right to short periods of unpaid leave to deal with family emergencies. In theory, if you were sacked for exercising this right, you could claim unfair dismissal without needing the one year qualifying period.

Of course, but that's very different to someone who only turned up to work on time TWICE in five months, and had 12 periods off work in the same time, not all for her daughter!

She's having a laugh! (Although not any more, perhaps.)

Post 9 - did you mean "lend her" not "borrow her" the money?

I think Torry Quine is right in that she can claim JSA and be paid until the decision is made by the DWP as to whether she was to blame for losing her job, in which case they may stop her benefits for 26 weeks.

I would think very carefully before lending someone like this money. You've done the right thing telling her to go to her mum's.

VfM4meplse has hit the nail on the head re. employers employing parents of young children. Obviously there will be times when someone NEEDS to take time off work to be with their child, but in this case it sounds like this person was just taking the proverbial.

One of my former work colleagues was off work once every two weeks, they worked out, because either she was ill, one of her three kids was ill, or the kids' babysitter was ill!!

It's quite clear she did, surely? Or are we digging at people now for not using the correct words?!

In the OP's shoes, I'm not sure I'd be certain that her "friend" even had a daughter.

But then I'm cynical, and I'm also not 100% certain that the OP isn't winding us all up - surely it isn't possible to only be on time twice in five months!

As a lone parent of a small child she doesn't even have to sign on as unemployed. That's probably why she isn't really taking working seriously. Maybe as the child gets older she'll get her head together.

    Annisele,

I am not winding anyone up, I have seen her come into work late many times and sometimes ringing in informing the manager she was going to be late. As I said I was shocked when I read her disciplinary letter stating the level of sickness and lateness.

But I guess management just let it go on until she hung herself. She was still on probation.
It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun

I am not a single parent, but OH works long hours therefore I deal with most of the childcare. I work 3 days a week, but if one of the kids is ill it is me that has to stay home. I would never call in sick, I reserve a portion of my annual leave each year to deal with sick children, my line manager will authorise annual or unpaid leave for me for sick children, but he has said I must never call in sick if it is not ME that is ill, it's a disciplinary offence. Is this not the case in most places? I am a hard mummy too, school/CM unless actually vomiting (+24hrs after) or proper ill (chickenpox etc). Vague headaches and sore tummies get pretty short shrift in my house! My kids are rarely ill, and I can almost always tell if it's genuine or not.

..you've never worked in Brighton, then? :rotfl::rotfl:

seriously, we had one girl who was 2 hours late on her first day.. The next day she was meant to be there at 9.30, come 11 she still hadn't arrived. Nice enough girl, but obviously mornings weren't for her.. (looking for roll-eyes smiley)

The working mums in my team do that too. We have an allowance for "parenting leave" which is unpaid and up to 4 weeks can be taken per year, per child, until the child is 5 years old. Mind you, a "week" is defined as a block of time off, so if the mum works 2 days a week and takes 1 or 2 days off, that's a "week". Dads get the allowance too, but I appreciate it's harder for single mums as there isn't anyone else to share the load.
