You can get B&B in North Berwick for £40. It's a 20 min or so train ride from central Edinburgh.

There's a Premier Inn at Newcraighall, just opposite the station there - that's a 2 min walk to the station, 5 min ride into Edinburgh - £65 for a room there.

....and that's just from a couple of minutes of googling and google maps. Where have you been looking, that you can't find anything less than £100....?

I think Berwick is a winner. Its like the Northumberland equivalent of Lands End. A very pretty victorian village with loads of character.
    Beats Edinburgh hands down!

You'll find that Berwick and North Berwick are 2 completely different places, the second being in Scotland

If you can plan some time ahead and dont mind going out of the tourist season as such (but having said that every month is tourist season in Edinburgh) look out for travelodge sales with £10, £19 or £25 rooms. There are several travelodges, a couple of them are city centre. We always go and stay with travelodge sale rooms - I've got a long weekend before Christmas, 3 nights £45 in total, just off the Royal Mile :j
