The problem you have is that it is one of Edinburgh's busiest times with the festival being on and if you leave it much longer the prices will only go up.

Not much in the way I can give to help you get the costs down but it's the price you pay for Edinburgh at that time of year

You have picked the one & only time when everyone wants to go to Edinburgh. The EIF festival. Everyone booked well in advance.
Thats the bad news, the good news is that you can book cheaply in Glasgow foe accomodation & wait it gets better - Book your tickets to see the Scottish Ballet perform.

The EIF wouldn't be a problem - the problem is the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, plus it's a public holiday weekend.

Unfortunately August in Edinburgh is going to be expensive. Any chance he could do the weekend after as you'll probably find the prices drop drastically.

Really bad time to go to Edinburgh, as already said. You'll be lucky to get anything under £100 a night, and things don't get much cheaper as you leave the city either. Even Glasgow hotels and B&Bs get booked up because of the transport connections.

Having said that, the Fringe is quite good, and there will be definitely be something to suit every taste and pocket.
  • dont like to say this, but you really have left it rather late. We are going up next week for 10 days and got a self catering place on the bus route (so we can leave the car at the cottage) for about £50 per night. That is for 3 of us but we booked it in April.. Have fun and hope you can find somewhere to stay.

Stay in Glasgow and train it - The service is frequent, reasonably quick and runs pretty late.

    Forgot about the Bank Holiday.
Only go to Edinburgh to see the touring ballet companies. It's a bad time of year in London when the Royal Ballet go on tour.

You can get B&B in North Berwick for £40. It's a 20 min or so train ride from central Edinburgh.

There's a Premier Inn at Newcraighall, just opposite the station there - that's a 2 min walk to the station, 5 min ride into Edinburgh - £65 for a room there.

....and that's just from a couple of minutes of googling and google maps. Where have you been looking, that you can't find anything less than £100....?
