Seems a few folk confused also
The cost of a GP giving you calpol (paracetemol suspension) is WAY WAY more than just the drug costs
On average each script costs the NHS £11.80 to process without the cost of drug, so no, many GPs wont give it unless they feel the family is very hard up and they wouldnt buy it otherwise

Care to back that up with some kind of evidence or is it a figure plucked from thin air? If that's true its down to !!!! poor management of the NHS why blame parents/patients for the NHS's lack of ability to negotiate with the drugs companies

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
That is a good price for calpol.

I happen to agree with not regulary dishing out paracetamol or ibuprofen at gp surgeries, or in A+E. The money spent on this can be spent elsewhere, the use of prescribing it should be reserved for those in financial difficulty, or those who have genunieally run out and its after hours where they could not get anymore. The cost is not that much, especially if you used unbranded suspensions (you will find what is dished out in hospital is not actually calpol or nurofen, there is no difference, just the taste) the trouble comes if the kid doesnt like the cheaper one!!

will have a look in tesco 2morrow

...as previous post have said i have another GP /HV clinic that WILL NOT prescribe calpol or even the cheaper version ( not that my kids would take this )

my youngest has been bothered a lot with ear infection's and also after having ear op or abcess /tooth out i was told to buy either paracetamol or nurofen

..they dont believe in issuing prescription for it although he wrote one for antibiotics
...my chemist ( boots where my daughter is regisitered under direct care also um and ahh if you ask for it ..as if its comming out their pocket

...yet i know mothers who even got bonjela off their HV/GP just depends where you live i suppose how readily available it is for free on prescription

Hi just been to my local tesco and noticed that they are selling calpol aged 6+ bottles for a £1 expiry date 2014. Hope this could help someone.:j

Don't know if this is a regional offer as I have just tried my local tescos and it was still over £2 a bottle. I wanted to stock up as it is the only thing that will help my daughters period pains as she can't swallow tablets.
  • Thanks OP will be stocking up for my older children. Last week my GP surgery would not prescribe infant paracetamol for my baby after her second set of vaccinations, even after I stated how unwell she was after her first set. I think it's a real disgrace.

  • You can get a pink book from your chemist, called Care At The Chemist which allows you to get stuff like calpol free from the chemist. There is a long list at the front of the things you can get. I'm very lucky as my daughter is rarely ill so I have never used one of the pink books but I have a friend with two young boys who uses hers a lot for everything.

I think the child has to be over 12 months but I'm not sure what age it goes up to.

As for the taking it to hospital thing, we had that when the wife had keyhole surgery to repair a hernia "bring your own painkillers" yeah because paracetamol really help with pain after surgery - twits. Worst part was she was crying in pain, buzzer wasn't working and then nurse said you can't be in pain you had keyhole surgery - goddamn NHS sometimes!!

Oh crap, I have a hernia op in three weeks :( I had my appendix out laparascopically just over a year ago (wasn't actually in surgery to have my appendix out, was there for another reason so that was a surprise when I woke up, LOL!) and that bloody hurt afterwards but they did prescribe codeine. I'm guessing that nurse who told your wife she couldn't be in pain has obviously never actually had keyhole surgery!
