It's not that long ago, supermarkets used to print all the details onto the cheque, you only had to sign.

Doesn't matter who writes all the details before the account holder signs it, but once it has been given as payment, only the person who signed the cheque can make any alterations, and they need to be initialled. This isn't limited to just changing what is there already but includes adding details that ought to have been there but were omitted. Technically if you use a payday loan company that cashes personal cheques and they ask that you do not date them, these cheques should not be banked unless you go back in and write the date on yourself. Although this is never likely to be picked up and probably wouldn't stand up if you wanted to use it as a defence against them banking them when you agreed.

Whoa... no you can't. A cheque can only go into an account in the same name(s) as is on the cheque.

Sorry for bumping this thread again but you absolutely can pay in a cheque without a name on it. I know because I have done it. I asked the bank clerk about it at the time, so it wasn't a case of them not noticing either.

So what did they think "account payee only" meant?

They didn't know what they were doing.
