Incomplete cheque received.

On a cheque I've received where my name should be written next to "Pay" this line has been left blank. Is it ok for me to just write my name there or would I need to get the person who sent me the cheque to correct it?

You can pay in a cheque without a name. Just make sure you don't lose it first

The correct answer is no, you can't. Only the person who actually wrote the cheque can put the name on it.

In practise, however, it really depends how the much the cheque is for and how vigilant both banks are. £10, say, and you will probably be OK. A million and you can expect questions.

Whilst you should not fill your name in, if this cheque is intended for you and you lose it....a "finder" may and you will have no comeback.

Write your name in pronto, without that it can be paid in by anybody.

It may be that it was left blank for you to complete because they were uncertain of your name, or maybe they forgot to complete that part.
  • Just fill it in. As long as it was intended for you in the first place, it was probably an oversight, or perhaps they didn't know exactly what name to write or how to spell it.
Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!

We've sometimes had cheques with the payee field blank and occasionally not noticed before paying in, and I've always been asked at the counter to fill it in, so the bank must be happy with that (Natwest, business a/c).

A little of topic but still regarding cheques a number of years ago I worked with a guy who was a complete joker and he once wrote out all the wage cheques and didnt sign them but put a little picture of mens parts on them, we all banked them and they cleared,

I would just write my name on it and bank it, as if theres a problem on cheque the actual account holders bank will just phone the person and check that its correct.

Make sure you use the same colour ink , we had to write our name on a cheque when a customer left it blank (they werent sure who to make it out to ) . The bank returned it because it was in different coloured ink

That was a bit petty. There's no reason I can't write cheques out in more than one colour ink if I so choose, or even have someone else write different parts of the cheque before I sign it (in fact it was standard in business for a clerk to write out the cheque and a director/manager/committee member to sign it. No quibble from the bank if they used different pens!).

Whoa... no you can't. A cheque can only go into an account in the same name(s) as is on the cheque.

This shouldn't be a problem, unless it was an extremely large amount and they also didn't believe the handwriting matched or something.
