Car insurance for 17 year old

Thanks for the clarification on the "purchasing in a shop" legalities. Ref low cost of insurance should have been ringing bells. It was. However, we've been looking at buying cars for a few weeks, and seen wide variations in the prices quoted for same car on different days during this time as well as wide variations in costs quoted depending on age of car - again highly variable and down as low as £1200. And of course, a mistaken belief that the Comparison Web sites would be returning valid quotes. If we'd only had one low quote we'd have been more suspicious. Ah well, he's now got his TESCO insurance and is off driving around. :-).
Interestingly I did check on having me as the owner and him as a named driver, and in all cases the quotes were much the same as having him as the owner and me as a named driver!! :-(.0 -
Sorry to bump an old thread but I wanted to share my experience having read through the insurance for young drivers advice.
My 17 year old son passed his test on Friday.
Phoned Admiral who I have a multicar policy with for an 07 reg Citroen C8 and V reg GTi 206.
To add him as named driver on both, expiring Aug 12, £3,800.
Used price comparisons website to get quotes for V reg 2.0 GTi Peugeot 206. Between 12 and 14 grand for TPFT and Comprehensive.
Went back to Admiral and to add him onto my insurance on just V reg GTi 206 expiring Aug 12, £1,800
However, TPFT in his name on V reg GTi 206 expiring Aug 12, with me as named driver, £920
Comprehensive in his name, where he's limited to driving just the V Reg Gti 206 (so no 3rd party on any other vehicle and increasing excess to £1000 - more than car is worth) and me as named driver - £811. Again expiring Aug 12, and he will then be able to claim 1 year no claims as long as he doesn't cancel within 6 months.
