Hi.

We're looking to insure a car for our 17-year old son.

The premiums are hugely variable - we've had just over £2000 to £20k+!

Can anybody suggest/recommend insurers?

Also are there any good strategies for reducing the premiums, like limited miles, trackers, etc.?

Thanks for your help!

You won't get it under £2k TBH.
  • just got my son insured with aviva - 54 plate citroen c2 sx 1.1
tried loads of different companies online and by phone - spent hours
had a quote for £1689 with me as main driver (not fronting as I will be using car as well as my old car is dead) and my son as named driver
Gave them a ring and they got me a quote with him as main driver and me as named driver, fully comp, him on a provisional licence, with the likelihood of the premium staying the same when he passes his test (most insurers increase the premium on passing)
Wait for it £1226.80 - really pleased as you can imagine
All I can say is well done Aviva for being realistric and not ripping the normal person off - not like most

my daughter (18 in march) passed on the 11th July. I rang to put her on my insurance, )02 Yaris 1 litre the same day, I asked to put her on temporary because shes hoping to go to uni in september so wont be able to take my car with her. The maximum for temporary was 42 days for which I paid £87.80. I had just renewed on the 3rd June and to put her on till then next year was £630, Im with Lv ,and I didnt think this was bad at all.

I expected about 1k, as I said earlier in the post due to uni didnt bother. They said I can ring on the 21st aug and extend, and I can even just put her on for weekends, minimum is 2 days

My DS1 is 17 on Wednesday.

My current insurers wouldn't add him to the insurance on our Mazda2. I guess they are geared towards middle aged responsible drivers.

Thinking about buying him a Ka or similar and insuring in his name.

Shopping around 6 weeks back for son 20yrs just passed test.
Pulled all the strings such as max mileage less than 6k pa, etc. Nissan Micra 20yr old £2650 3rd party. £2300 online!

What was £1750 last year is now around £2300+

Copped me out as well, you may see a low price and something needs altering in the quote but cant do online. Ring up to rectify and the price immediately goes up as its not online, then additions such as breakdown cover, liability etc are sold and added to new quote.

I've been ripped off horrendously by Aviva's motor claims department....

If it looks too good to be true and all that.

Young people's insurance is a racket, and should be investigated. We all get told how we are paying so much more on our premiums due to uninsured drivers, yet it turns out to be a quite minimal percentage (can't recall exactly, abour 6% or something stupid like that). Yet they charge such a whopping starter price, I imagine this has in many ways a lot to do with the increasing numbers of uninsured drivers.

I'm not saying that's a good reason to drive without insurance, but frankly, if you live in the sticks, you can't use public transport to get to work because the timetable is inadequate, you need a car. I know of several young blokes who've been pulled for no insurance, because they couldn't afford the deposit to insure until they'd gotten their first wage, they couldn't get their first wage without getting to work, they couldn't get to work without a vehicle.

Anyhoo, IMO, policies should start at a reasonable rate, rather than a huge premium based on the assumption of accidents, and increased if and when accidents occur.

Sorry OP, no help to you at all, just a rant.

My son has recently insured with elephant, as they required no deposit and were the lowest on the comparison site.

Other son uses Swinton, though he wasn't impressed with their after sales service.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

Totally agree gravitytolls. Never a good reason to have no insurance, but it's easy to see why so many people are uninsured given the prices being charged. It's not helped if you add Commuting to the policy (I know many don't, even though they use the car to get to work) as that ups the price. Uni work placement is going to be expensive for me!

Elephant come out cheapest for me. I'm 20 (Male) and passed for 2 years but not driven - but that still, weirdly, seems to lower my premium compared to putting 20 and just passed! I guess the risk models are assuming I've done some driving just have not got a NCB due to making some kind of non-fault claim possibly? As (IIRC) many ask if you have made any at fault claims rather than any claims at all

I haven't actually got a car, but using several cars I'd like Elephant keep coming out on top. Annoyingly, if I add named drivers my prices go down at least £400/500, which I think is a shambles but looks like the only way I'm going to be able to afford it. Am I right in thinking all I need are copies of their driving license? I know a few friends that will help me out if that's all that I need

Don't assume TPFT is cheaper than fully comp. I was getting a quote for my OH with her own car as provisional licence holder and the premium went up by £100 when I changed it from fully comp to TPFT!
It also went down slightly when I added myself as a named driver.
