  • Hi all

Let's keep the thread on topic for the OP please. It's not a benefits discussion, if you want that can you go to Discussion Time? And if you disagree with other forum users please put them on your ignore list.

    Thank you!

    Andrea :)

She has no surviving family. I would think a budgeting loan is the only way forward. It will come off her benefits though.
Since MSE towers were kind enough to delete my response, she won't get a budgeting loan as she need to be on benefits for 26 weeks.

Its been a BAD day for being disillusioned with the human race as a whole...:(:(:(

It's worth considering that the claimant must have been receiving an appropriate qualifying benefit for at least 6 months to be able to receive a budgeting loan. If claiming Jobseekers Allowance, they must also be claiming the Income Based version rather than the Contributions based version - contributions claimants are not entitled to receive a budgeting loan regardless (which makes sense as you can only claim for 6 months anyway).

IF circumstances become fragile, and it reached the stage that the OP is at risk of losing their home, they could try for a crisis loan. However, whether they would be successful is doubtful, and, they would only get part of the £700.

They would not receive a crisis loan for this expense - I would exclude it under Direction 23(2)(f) [a crisis loan may not be awarded for] housing costs, including repairs and improvements to the dwelling occupied as the home including any garage, garden and outbuildings, and including deposits to secure accommodation, mortgage payments, water rates, sewerage rates, service charges, rent and analogous charges for accommodation (there are exceptions but they don't cover this).

Also since crisis loans for household items were withdrawn in April the non living expenses loans will only be paid as a result of a disaster or emergency for which the applicant was not responsible, after a community care grant has been declined - read fire/flood etc.

Thanks for the clarification, it is good to know :)
