Winzip or similar

I have videos on my pc (about 82 - 125MB) but when i email or send on MSN they take sooooooo long to transfer. I was told i need to Zip em, but not told anymore. I m guessing zipping is another word for compressing? It needs to be free and easy...

Ideas on a postcard...

Winzip is a program that will compress the size of files therefore making them smaller.

I think you should be able to compress files if you use XP automatically without having to download a version of Winzip.

If you right click a file that you want to compress using XP and then click on send to, and then compressed(zipped) folder should appear.

By compressing the file it should make it smaller

However I believe that xipping wont alwayts compress images & video files too much so you may not save yourself much

Best bet is to probably zip up a file and compare the normal file size and then the compressed file size to see how much smaller the compressed version is

Try downloading zipgenius, it's free and works pretty well

As Shaun said though, most video and audio file formats are already compressed so you probably won't be able to compress them anymore.

There are websites you can use to transfer files, have a look at this thread for a few suggestions.

There was a thread that listed loads of similar sites, you may be able to find it if you search for it

Videos will already be heavily compressed, so zipping them will not reduce the size by much (if at all). In fact it may make them bigger.

  • I think WinZip has a trial version available.

I use Zip995 from http://www.software995.com - it's free, but if you want to get rid of the popup, then pay them $19.99 and there's a whole suite of 10 programs you get. I think it's $9.99 for one program - well worth it for the whole lot though.

    Then it's not free - it's shareware.

Not quite - "A shareware program is accompanied by a request for payment, and the software's distribution license often requires such a payment"

Zip995 is free software. This is not an evaluation version. With Zip995, you may use our product as long as you would like, with no obligation to purchase.

Stompa is right, video compressed with winzip, winrar you will not achieve a hige reduction. Its better to compress it or downsize the video via software thats built for video. How about compressing it to XViD, DivX etc. It would depend on what sort of video format the source is too.

You stated that the software generates a 'popup', which I assumed to be a solicitation for payment. A quick look at the site in question reveals - to my chagrin - that this is not the case:
The free version of Zip995 will display a sponsor page in your web browser every fifth time you run the software. If you would prefer not to see sponsor pages, you may purchase a Zip995 license key for $9.95.
Nevertheless, in my book, that makes it both shareware and adware.

    Zip995 is not free software.
