Mattress Topper - make own?

I agree - spare duvets go on top of mattresses - have always done that. Makes a massive difference in the winter. Aldi have got some mattresses toppers at the moment for around a fiver, if you put one of these on top of the duvet then it stays in place, I've never had a problem with them moving.
Someone I visit doesn't use anything between mattress and sheet, apart from being incredibly unhygienic and surely the mattress must get damp, I find it really uncomfortable, every little bit of quilting etc in the mattress feels like a huge lump.0 -
I use our old duvets as mattress toppers too. They just hold in place when you put a fitted sheet on top. When we were clearing out my late SIL's house I inherited all her linen cupboard, including her egyptian cotton sherts and goose down duvets. A gree, you definately get what you pay for and there's no way I'd ever be able to spend a couple of hundred pounds on one duvet so I really appreciated her posh stuff!
One other way to store duvets btw is to fold them up into a flat package and make a big cushion cover for them, to use as floor cushions. I used to make two cushion covers from an old duvet cover (recycling again!!) so as to double-bag the kids out of season duvets and they'd just use them as seating.Val.0 -
Thank you everyone! I did reply sooner but for some reason it didn't post last night...!
Looks like it's not a crazy idea so I guess I'll just HAVE to go to JLs at the weekend and buy the squishable duvet... and some elastic. Quite excited by this...hehe!0 -
I use a large fleece throw on my super king size bed's mattress & it's great.
Only cost about £12.00 and apart from making the mattress really comfortable to sleep on it dries so fast when it has been washed that I can have it back on the bed on the same day.
I did buy a fitted cover for it a few years ago but chucked it out after a couple of years because it looked ok but when I washed it it was so big & heavy that it could take 3 or 4 days for it to dry indoors & was way too big to put out on my rotary line.0 -
Hi Mazzawa,
Every time we replace a duvet we put the old one onto the mattress. It adds extra comfort and protects the mattress, so if I were you I'd forget the mattress topper and go for the duvet you want.

My DM used to put old eiderdowns on the mattress, that was 60 years ago. I use an old duvet, it's an ideal place to store it and is always there if I need a spare for visitors. It's probably a good idea to hang it over the line and give it a good beating once or twice a year, as I find it gets a bit dusty. Also a good way of venting anger! 'Mattress topper' is just another way of ripping off those who arent in the know. Thank goodness for the common sense of MSN!0

Thank you again! I will certainly be getting a new duvet in the next few days - yay!
Quick question for all you lovely people - we want to buy a kingsize bed next time round so don't want to buy just a double duvet (too expensive to do again!) but cannot afford new bed linen. Can you fit a kingsize duvet in a double case without it being awkward/overly lumpy?0 -

I think there's about a 12" difference in size, so it would feel a bit odd I would imagine. I bought two singles for our double bed as I can't stand duvet wars and I like to be wrapped in a duvet - I sleep much better now0
