Mattress Topper - make own?

Ok so not really true moneysaving... truth is after going to John Lewis with the intention of buying a mattress topper and a real down duvet we made the mistake of squishing the most expensive duvet in the shop (Siberian goose down...) and now can't see past it!

So my question is, could I be crafty and use our current synthetic duvet as a mattress topper? I remember back in the day that you used to make a mattress protector out of old flannel sheets and you'd secure it with those strap things (sorry cant really remember, was quite young!) that you'd thread through a few holes around the edge?

We can't afford a new mattress as we want to get new bedroom furniture in a couple of years once settled into the new house, but need to be nice and toasty and comfy to keep the heating bills down!

Damn John Lewis making expensive duvets so squishable! :rotfl:

A lot of people use a duvet as a mattress topper in the winter. Wouldn't it be a bit warm for the summer?

I've used a spare duvet as a mattress topper before. Works well but it does tend to move round a bit so a bit of extra work to do when making the bed. Worth it though!

Ooh, I wish my mum had thought of securing them with straps, we had old worn blankets that had to be tucked back into place every time you made the bed!

Betterware or Kleeneze (or both...) have elastic straps that clip onto sheets to stop them shifting around on the mattress - I think they'd work to hold your duvet on the mattress. Lakeland probably stock them too.

There is a site on the net The Thrifty skinflint Goes Green and she suggests sewing 3 x 3 pillows in vertical lines together as a mattress topper. I think its a really good idea.
Make £2 a day challenge - doing well so far.

What is a mattress topper, what does it do, exactly?

we used a single duvet as a mattress topper for our double bed - extended the life of our HORRIBLY UNCOMFORTABLE mattress by about 3 years and also make the bed really cosy in winter. We used it in summer too and I don't remember boiling but we probably only used a bed sheet or throw above us rather than a duvet in summer We had some thick elastic that we stitched to the corners to help secure it to the mattress - otherwise it does need to be adjusted each time you make the bed!

Velcro the duvet to the mattress, just tack it on with a few stitches.
    Loving the sunny days!
  • or sew some quarter inch elastic onto the duvet, in the places where the clips would go
    10m for £2
at that price you could sew 2 complete bands around the width of the matress

I live in a one bed flat with hardly any storage and thats how I store my spare duvet and blanket. In winter they are on top of the mattress (but under the mattress protector and sheet) and in the summer I put them under my mattress. I really fancy a memory foam mattress topper but am a bit worried my bed will get like the one in the princess and the pea!

All of our beds have an old quilt as a mattress topper it makes the bed toasty and comfy.

I'd buy the goose down quilt and use your current one as a topper.
