Worst New Year

Hi people had the worst new year in France. Firstly i had my wallet pick pocketed on the metro then went onto Seafrance back to dover.

This is where the problem lies. My car must have hit the car (J Reg Jaguar) infront when we were on the ferry and its back bumper had been indented. But I did have my handbrake on, however the car must have jerked forward. What happens now?

The car is insured under my dads name and I am the 3rd driver and yet havent told him.

The person took my name, address, telephone number and registration plate.

What happens now?

What would the costs be?

If you are deemed liable for the damage then the third party would claim for their losses from your insurance. If there is no damage to your vehicle that you intend to claim for then there is nothing for you to pay at all (an excess only applies to claims for your own damages) but needless to say your premiums will go up next year and your NCD will go down (if it isnt protected).

Your Dad should inform his insurers of the incident and then if any correspondence is received on the matter forward it to them unanswered.

To succeed in a claim against you the other person has to show you were negligent and I'm not so sure you were.

Am I correct in thinking that your car moved during the journey home. Nobody in the car?
Has the car been serviced recently / handbrake checked and working okay?

If all the above is correct then it looks like the cars have shifted on the car deck due to the motion of the boat / cat and that is beyond your control.

Explain all this to your dad's insurers and they will tell the other person to go away.

No I wasnt in the car at the time. My car was parked in the second tier. So when we arrived at dover the ferry deelavates down while we stand 5 metres away.

Car has been serviced recently and handbrake is fine.

Still worried in telling my dad. See if the man phones me today and if possible do this without getting insurers involved.

Do what without getting insurers involved? Pay the man? Why?

You really are going to have to tell your dad. He will not be best pleased if the other person tracks down his details and he knows nothing about it.

    HER,

If you don't notify the insurance company now and you were to have an accident in 6 months and they were to find out, you're insurance may be invalid.

If you are worried about telling your dad because you are afraid of what he'll say, think how mad he will be if the above scenario were to happen.

As mattymoo says, this doesn't really sound like your fault.

I would tell your dad asap.

A reasonable man would realise that accidents happen an help you through the situation.
Also a person mature enough to be able to drive should also be brave enough to put their hand up and admit what has happened.

It was his car originally however when i passed he gave it to me. He put his name as first driver to reduce the cost of my insurance. However im 25 now so I believe costs become lower.
