Mini rant about cc - I'm peeved!

About 3 weeks back I applied (was pressured into applying at the checkout) for a Mastercard associated with a well known high street store. The card is issued by Barclays.

The application was deferred at the till and I was told that I would be contacted by customer services. I received a letter a few days later asking for various documents so my identify could be verified.

The above usually happens when the Electoral register check fails, and I notice that the address on the letter sent to me was mangled with commas in the wrong places.

I rung the customer services number and pointed this out, but was told I should send the documents anyway as the need for identify verification could be for "other reasons".

At this point I was minded to bin the application but against my better judgement I complied as photo-id wasn't involved. A few days later I received two letters - the first was a PIN letter with my address still mangled. The second letter was to another variation of my address (mangled and misspelt this time) once again asking for documents to verify my identify. ARRGGH!

My blood pressure was going through the roof at this stage. I rung customer services and read them the riot act and was told that my address was now correct in their systems.

By the way, the address cockup was not due to me. The application process at the till used post code lookup software and I was shown the correct address on the screen at the time of application.

Finally to top it all off, a week passed without any sign of the card (the PIN letter mentioned within 2 days). I then received a letter from a courier company advising that they have been unable to deliver an "urgent delivery of a bank card from Barclays".

Now redelivery can be arranged Monday to Friday, which can be at anytime betwen 9 and 5:30 - Oh and the courier needs to see proof of identity before the card will be handed over. This rules out redelivery to my workplace as all mail goes to a central mailroom for security reasons.

So after my going through hoops over their address ****up, they send the card by courier(?) , and I will need to take a day off work to wait around to receive it? My thoughts about what they can do with their card are far too explicit for this family board - All I will say is that the words foxtrot and oscar are included

There...I feel better now.

I would be more inclined to aim this rant at the retailer. First rule of computing applies - Garbage In - Garbage out. Whoever the card issuer is, they can only work with the info passed to them.
I would say you were fairly lucky, most of the generic authorisation systems that I work with would have found more than 3 points of difference and declined the application.

November Tango Yankee* would have been sufficient at various points in this process.

You do not need to take a day off work, you need to phone them and say that you are not interested in the card, please close the account and remove any records with credit reference agencies.

loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

As above. I avoid paper applications like the plague, and I avoid applying for something someone else has offered to me like the plague.

I went to buy some new jeans and trousers from Next at the weekend, both at the door and at the till I was offered "10% off and all we need is your email address".

Suffice it to say, neither employee are under any false impressions about my dissatisfaction over their misrepresentation of a credit facility and application therein. I think it's sick that they lie to cusotmers like that but it's no bother, I put them in their place.

Didn't feel pressured atall. The feeling pressured was all on their side of the table :o

I hope I haven't given the impression that I'll be taking a day off work to await the wretched card!

Out of principle I refuse to do so even if this could be easily arranged.

I'm biding my time to see whether they'll contact me when the courier eventually returns the card. If so they'll wish they hadn't.

I consider myself (and so do my colleagues) a very laid back guy, but I admit I seriously lost it on this one.

Since my "vent", I've had a great day :)

Similar thing happened to me, even worse, after I answered that yes I have an account, and yes, I use it regularly, the employee at my local Next asked if I had "an alternative email address, as we can open you a second account"!

I was aghast - how would two Next accounts look on my credit file lol!

Clearly a stats game with a graph in the staff canteen showing the monthly 'winners'...
    Spreadsheet-obsessed.
