Tesco out of date products

Hi all, I'm very new at this so you'll have to bear with me ....
Rather a long story but the short version is I bought some microwave popcorn from Tesco on Friday, decided to use it last nite. Followed the instructions by the letter only to find it smouldering after 1m 30secs. Took it outside to see that the date on the packaging was 08/06/10
I phoned the Tesco store where I bought it from and after lots of phonecalls (easier to get through to the Queen than the store you want), people saying they will ring back and they didn't, they have apologised and offered me a £10 gift card as a goodwill gesture.
Just wondering what you guys think. Should I take the gift card (I live 30 miles away so my Ma is collecting it for me) and leave it at that?? Or should I contact Environmental Health/Trading Standards?? I have not read the product best before date wrong, it was manufactured on 08/06/08 and best before 08/06/10.
Grateful for any help/comments. Thanks x

Not impossible that someone in-store has misread the date as August 6th instead of June 8th, so not removed it from the shelf. Also, it is a "best before", not a "use by", so the product might still have been OK. (Granted though that it says 2010, so more than a year out of date!)
As said above - mistakes happen. Take the £10 and move on with life.0 -
The store is supposed to be fined £2k for each out of date product they get caught with on sale but I doubt if you would get any of it at all.
You would cause the store more aggravation if you call eho. Out of date popcorn is not going to harm anyone, I would take the tenner!0 -
Hi, thanks for your advice, me thinks I will take the money and run so to speak!0

Who by and under what legislation?
Best before dates refer to quality (as ops found out) and has no health and safety impact.
I would accept the tenner and ask them to psot it to me0 -
Accept the tenner then go to odeon buy popcorn0

It is not against the law to sell food after the BEST BEFORE date (unliek USE BY I believe) - however there is an offence of selling food that is effectivley not fit for human consumption and or dangerous.
The question is, did the popcorn meet that criteria?0 -
I bought some beansprouts on Friday (29th) with a use by of 27th. That'll teach me to check this thingsSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
@mo786uk - I'm not too sure - I followed the instructions to the letter, yet the popcorn still smouldered in the microwave ie about to set on fire. Sorry - forgot to post that the instructions stated ' 2 - 3 minutes for 800W microwave'.
Did this happen because the product was out of date and 'dangerous' erm, not too sure either. Would you take the matter further? Need some advice please!!0 -
