It's too early to buy the winter bedding as plug plants, that's more of an autumn thing. I usually do mine mid october when I pull the summer bedding out. However if you want to try growing from seed, I think you could start now if you were quick and started them off indoors.

no i was going to buy them as schrubs as opposed to seeds, i will get some in october and plant them :j

we're going to put in Christmas spuds (Pentland javelin), some cheeky carrots (well - you have to try! I have some random seed left over) onions (Hi Keeper and Rouge Long de Florence - both for overwintering), spring cabbage (April) and some peas for overwintering (Meteor...). If you had a poly tunnel you may get away with sowing stuff to be ready in Sept/Oct... perhaps.
  • Still time to get some lettuce / mixed salad leaves and spring onion in

Also a good time (Sept/Oct) seperate a garlic bulb into cloves and get it in some pots or in the ground - mark where you've put it so you know when it starts coming up in 3 months time....

Anything that overwinters will be good - some onions are good over winter and if you're in the South you might want to try runner beans in a sheltered position

I am going to try some Heucheras for the foliage colours.
They are evergreen and lots of different colours. Also the little Winter flowering Violas are reliable and long lasting :-)

Ooh, I've got some wisteria if you were close you could have tried a few cuttings! I've just pulled out a fragrant bush plant that I loved but was leggy, and replanted with some penstemon, a grass and some bulbs that seem to be coming through so my garden is slowly getting there!

If you've got any Gardening Centre Group shops locally, they have Heucheras on special offer 2 for £10. Lots of different colours, reds, purples, multi shade greens, etc. Lovely in winter :)
  • Hellebores will give you some early interest

Love Hellebores, bees don't though so don't plant if you're trying to attract wildlife but gorgeous aren't they - great suggestion!
