This struck a cord with me. One Friday last month my cousin was found dead - at the age of 26. He had a blood clot in the brain that had been undetected. The Sunday of the same weekend my DH cousin lost his battle with Bowel cancer - at the age of 43. Both died too young and no doubt had lots of unfulfilled "wants" that they had put off for another day. That day had never arrived.
It is normal to question your own mortality but that weekend had a profound effect on both of us. The things we were putting off (stupid, little things like tiling the kitchen - after 4 years!, buying long needed new sofa's etc) we just went out and did. It is VERY therapeutic to cross things off a mental list. We had the savings stashed but found excuses not to spend them on their purpose. We are like you in that we don't have financial worries, but we kept putting it off - for what reason I don't know. We have actually had a weekend away without the kids for the first time in 13 years (my sister was always offering to have them but we kept finding excuses) and had a brilliant time. We have booked a second holiday to Turkey at the end of the month - extravagant I know, expecially when there are people who cannot afford one, but our children will not always want to come oin holiday with us so we are making the most of the time when they do!
We have got our Wills updated and finances in order and now don't intend to die with any fun in the bank!0 -
A quick update on things. I have decided to go for it and get those things that I have been putting of, done. I haved:
- booked an appointment with my GP to get him to sign my fitness to do a parachute jump form - I have always wanted to do this, despite being petrified of heights, and i will be jumping in the next two weeks or so
- investigating a nothern lights holiday next year - we have narrowed it down to a couple of choices
- looked into a trrip to Italy, by train. My wife is scared of flying and she has always wanted to go to italy,so we are going to do this next summer
- a cruise to New York
I am making progress, I think. The financial side of things still need a bit of sorting out, but I am getting there.
I would like to thank everyone who has replied, and i have been close to tears (and it takes a lot to put me in that state of mind) as a result of all the advice and kindness shown to me on this thread.
