bBT ripping the backside out of their customers

Hi guys

we are moving home in the next few weeks and have been with BT since christmas 2010. We pay them nearly sixty pounds per month for broadband and digital television and telephone, which we accept as we needed all these services when we moved in. Unfortunately we need to uproot our kids and move, due to the drunks and drugs in the area and we dont want our two oldest kids to see things that they shouldnt and learn that this is in someway "normal" (the third is a baby)

We called them to discuss moving home and they advised us they will be charging 130.00 line install for the house, even though its a simple run of a line from the pole thats just outside our garden in the new house. We asked about cancellation and were advised they would look for nearly 400 pounds.

Just cant find where this is fair or justified

I suspect you signed for a minimum contract period last Christmas, which would explain the disconnection fee.

Why should BT be out of pocket because you have decided to move?

Connection/re-connection of a phoneline is a cost you should have allowed for when considering the move.

Re-connection of a line with BT is always free. There is only ever a charge if there is work involved ie. an engineer needs to do something as otherwise it is the flick of a switch.

BT are a total rip off, I cannot see any way around this charge to get the line up and running as even if you move to another provider you still need the BT line normally. So I would pay this to BT then dont use them any more, if you use SKY for all the services you mentioned, you will probably pay a lot less (anyone is cheaper than BT) Personally I have SKY for line rental, sky tv and broadband and pay about 45 per month. The sky is the full package minus the sports and internet is the maximum package so fastest, unlimited d/loads etc.

Sky digital TV is freeview with a record option so no comparison there. I dont want to sound like an ambassador for sky but it really is so much better than BT. My mother is with BT and its rubbish TV wise.

Wow, you have a good deal there with Sky! I pay them £62 per month for TV only - though that is for the full packages + HD. But I then have to pay extra for phone / broadband (not with Sky for those though).

Yeah well I dont have HD or Sports so maybe that is why the gap is sp big, is HD not a standard £10 per month extra?

Line rental with SKY is about £2 cheaper than BT and I think you would get the standard SKY internet package free if you are already spending £60+ per month

However to get BT to install the line you would have to sign up to a minimum 12 month contract.

So the cost for the line would be £130 install + £120 (cheapest package).

Thanks for the advice. I already get my broadband for free, so might look into the phone side.

Yeah, worth enquiring about I suppose. I dont get calls with Sky as dont use the landline, just pay the line rental.

Didnt think of that, maybe another provider could install the line too?

Whats the 120, a yearly amount for the cheapest package?
