Web-billing.com - Fraud?

Hi,

I have just been looking through my credit card statement and found £44.67 debited to a company called web-billing.com with some kind of account number and 69.90 US dollars with the dollar rate.

I was wondering whether I had overlooked some bill but I can't for the life of me remember getting something from the USA with this amount. The office of my credit card is closed at the moment.

I have looked up web-billing.com . There is a company called webbilling.com which appears to be a genuine Europe-wide company. However it does not have the - (dash) in the address that the firm on my credit card statement has.

When I looked up http://web-billing.com/ I got up a domain name for sale. Try it yourself and see! I looked this up the owner on whois http://www.whois.net/whois/web-billing.com which appears to be someone registered in Korea.

Looking through the forums I do find that another person on this forum at https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3354934 seems to have been complaining about similar and it seems to be associated with a debt collection agency. However this person is talking about webbilling.com whereas the firm on my credit card bill is web-billing.com

http://webbilling.com which appears to be a completely different and legitimate company, technical consultancy, with its own website separate to http://web-billing.com When I did a search for http://web-billing.com on Google, what appears to be the legitimate European company at http://webbilling.com came up.

However, when I inputted the web-billing.com - the name on my credit card statement - as an url and not through Google, the website with the domain name for sale came up so I can understand why some people psychologically could be misled into believing http://web-billing.com is the same as http://webbilling which it does not seem to be.

I have also found another posting complaining of a fraudulent direct debit from a bank account from February 2011 https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3077346 where there appears to be another variation on the name. This time webbilling.com Ltd. This appears to be have an address in the City of London. https://www.webbilling.com/web/toc_ltd_en.html

I'm worried about this. I have recently taken out a mobile phone contract for the very first time with what appears to be a reputable company and almost immediately my name and address was used for a fraud on Orange (I am not with Orange). I have since had a prolonged correspondence with Orange which I am considering reporting to the Information Commissioner as it brings up wider issues than my individual case.

It may just be that I have overlooked a bill but I can find no invoice from or through web-billing.com and the domain name http://web-billing.com appears to be for sale.

Has anyone else had any problems with the firm web-billing.com (not webbilling.com afaik) on their credit card or can offer advice on this? As I've said, I don't want to jump to conclusions and it is late at night but at the moment I cannot think of anything I've bought which fits this.

Thanks!

Obviously I buy stuff on the web regularly but I also have the invoices.

As I've said, going through my invoices to reconcile my credit card statement, I found this payment and it seems to relate to a Korean website with a domain name which is actually for sale! I can't remember having ordered anything with this sum at http://www.web-billing.com and I don't have an invoice.

The only other firm I can find with this name is in Boca Raton in Florida, Web-Billing Inc which does not seem to have a website.

The Dutch-based firm Webbilling.com appears to be a separate firm both in Europe and also in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

However this has has the web address http://www.webbilling.com with no - hyphen. With a google search for web-billing.com, webbilling.com comes up because Google ignores the hyphen but the URL http://www.web-billing.com brings up a for sale domain.

Doing a search and summoning up my rudimentary German which also helps with Dutch, it seems that the latter is associated with "adult" and gaming sites, neither of which I have ever, even in my wildest moments, subscribed to or purchased from!

However as I've said, what is on my credit card statement seems subtly different - with a hyphen between web and billing, web-billing. And that leads me back to the Korean website, the domain name of which is for sale.

The owner, one Jung Hochul, seems to have had legal action taken against him by among others Club Med, Kodak and the company which controls the commercial rights for the Rolling Stones for registering domain names in bad faith

    eg http://www.worldlii.org/int/other/GENDND/2002/239.html

I'll keep you updated how I get on with my enquiries. If anyone meanwhile has other info on any of this, let me know!

    Thanks!

Stop worrying and let your CC issuer dispute it for you.
  • Do you play World of Tanks at all? I had the same charge on my bank statement and it took me a while to figure out what it was.

On my business current account, when we reconciled the bank statements we saw a regular direct debit from WebBilling.com Limited. They make it quite difficult to contact them, so I asked our bank to refund the direct debits which they did immediately and in full.

We haven't heard from them, which means they are either a scam, or some scammer used our bank details when setting up a transaction with them.
  • I'm having a similar problem though the site is called webs-billing(dot)com (With a "s") instead of web-billing(dot)com. webs-billing(dot)com appears to be based in Silver Springs, MD, USA according to a whois search.

Yesterday I noticed a $1.00 pending transaction from GOOGLE* on my bank statement. I know for a fact that I haven't used my check card in about a week and I never bought anything from Google or a Merchant using Google Checkout. When I called the bank, they told me that my check card had been processed at 4:43 am (I was most certainly not shopping online at that time). I tried to contact Google with no luck of course.

This morning I checked my account again, and now in addition to the $1.00 charge from Google, there is a $129.50 charge from Freewebs Corpor. I did some searching around on the web and discovered that Freewebs Corp is now called webs.com. On their site, they have a link for "Billing Support" that immediately takes you to a page called at webs-billing(dot)com that's titled "Unauthorized Charge(s)?"

My first thought was "Is this common for them?" In order to dispute the charge with them, they ask for the following:

    Your First and Last Name
    Phone Number
    Email Address
    Billing Zip Code
    Amount Charged
    Date you were charged
Last 4 digits of your card (ONLY!)

I'm leery about providing them any of my info as I can't tell if they're legitimate. Of course, they already seem to have my check card information but I think I'll forego handing over the rest of my vital information. I've already called the bank again and had my card cancelled. According to the bank, I can't dispute the charge until tomorrow for some reason, and will then have to wait up to 10 business days for the money to be credited back to my account. Sheesh! Makes me not want to ever use my check card again if it's that vulverable.
