Is my SP30 a "conviction" for car insurance

I have two SP30's...both fixed penalty, 3 points each, £60 fine each, didn't contest them, posted fines, no court appearances, one was 4 years ago, one was 1 year ago

My question is...are these considered as "convictions " for car insurance purposes?

Because "conviction" seems rather a strong word for what I did!!...just over the speed limit on both occasions, but that's fine. I take responsibilty 100%, but didn't want to naively declare something to the car insurance companies if it wasn't necessary, since I'm certain it will mean higher premiums

Have been a much more resonsible driver since my second SP30 in June of last year, to the occasional frustration of my passengers who always seem to be in a hurry

If you have not notified your insurers, your insurance is invalid. Many do not allow 3 points to impact premium, but most bump up premiums for 6.

Got all my insurances cheaper last year even although I had gained an SP30.

This year I've had a bump and initial quotes suggest a £30 increase which is before I try cashback.

    Not too bad really.

Not declared as a conviction as such, I declare them when asked about motoring offences with a seperate question for non motoring convictions answered as no.

If 3 of the points are over 4 years old, chances are they wont affect a quote and would probably be removable from your licence (may be some 3 point offences that are valid longer than 3 years but I dont know).

yes it may be just over the limit but you were over the limit and was caught so in turn you have to inform the insurers. Ive got an sp30 myself so i do kind of know what its like. Its a driving offence irrespective of how fast you were going.

Most driving offences can be removed from the licence 4 years after the offence see http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/EndorsementsAndDisqualifications/DG_10022425.

However the convictions is not considered spent (under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act) until 5 years have elapsed. So if they ask for any motoring convictions in the last 5 years then you would still have to declare it.

Strictly speaking an SP30 is a motoring offence endorsement not a conviction. A motoring conviction as such is one where you've had to go to court and thus be "convicted" of an offence. I suppose it depends on how the question is asked on the insurance form, most will ask for all motoring "offences" commited within 5 years of which you declare your SP30.

    I looked in to this.
Technically a Fixed Penalty is NOT a conviction. Only a Court can convict.
If they ask you to list your convictions, well, you have nothing to list.
However, I still declare my 3 points, just because I decided I wanted the easy life.
