Before you do that consider how long you will be there and what you will use.

You may also want to look at what options your provider has, for example Porugul is Euro zone 1, so should be covered by the priice cap. I'm on Vodafone and they do a £2 for 25MB deal with the Data Traveeler service, Depending on how long you are there and what you intend to use the data for it may be cheaper to buy a bundle than a local sim.
  • I am with Giffgaff and they have just launched there roaming rates and they are too high.

I ultimately would like to use it as I do at home but I understand that is not going to happen.

I would like to be able to check emails and use google street map if I get lost ect.

DD has an Ipod touch and the hotel has free wifi so will probably fight her for it.

Think I might just have to switch roaming off :(.

Forgot to say I am away for a week.
  • Info on local SIMs is on:-

    http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/portugal.html

You might find overall it is easier to get a UK Vodafone PAYG SIM, put £20 on it and use their £2 a day data roaming deal.

    Free SIM at :-

    https://freesim.vodafone.co.uk/orders/add?package_id=1&tracker=58f8dj

Data cost on PAYG" £2 a day for 25MB (midnight to midnight, UK time) in Europe."

I found 25MB enough for plenty of Google Maps and a bit of e-mail and general web use on an Android phone when in France earlier this year.

Consider carefully if "Vodafone passport" is worth opting into or not.

For the odd quick call incoming or outgoing it probably isn't a good deal. If you like to talk (or know someone else who does !) it might be good for the incoming call aspect.

What type of phone do you have ?.

It is probably possible to limit overseas data use.

    Enjoy your holiday.
  • I would suggest using Lyca Sim Card on roaming which a link is here:

    lycamobile.co.uk/internationalroaming.aspx?

Their roaming in portugal is as follows:

    Portugal is in Zone 2
    Local calls charge - £0.30p
    Incoming calls - £0.09p
    Incoming SMS - £0.00p FREE
    Outgoing SMS - £0.11p

So all in all not bad at all, also if you using the same sim in the uk calls from your Lyca to Portugal landlines are only £0.01p if you have family/friends there how cheap is that, is even cheaper than using Lebara.

While in the uk you can charge in most places, ie supermarkets local stores, online etc.... If you in Portugal you can charge it online. (one thing to bear in mind their site is very slow to access and at times fails to let you in)

Another SIM you can buy in Portugal is the UZO sim calls are fairly cheap to all mobiles, and as all the portuguese SIM cards the easiest way to charge them is using a MULTIBANCO ATM machine, instructions usually come with the card but is also very intuitive on the ATM to make payment as you can use the mobile number to identify to make payment into. Link bellow for you to check prices:

    uzo.pt/pt/tarifario/pagina.uzo

Hope this all helps!!!! :j :T

I got a TMN sim card from the local store for €14.99 with 1 month unlimited data, I used it in my iPad so don't know what they are like for calls/texts
