Does Santander still charge if you go over by under 10.00?

Hello,

I have an over draft but because of two DD my account went over by 6.00 in total, the next day it was back in order. They are charging me 25.00 EACH for a matter of hours. I think this is totally unfair but they don't care and won't listen to me. I asked if it could at least be split so I can pay over two months but they are "unable to do that".

Seriously annoying. I was wondering if they still charge if you go over by under a tenner. I read somewhere online yesterday that their policy has changed and they do this now?? I know HSBC do it due to recent changes. Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks

    Yes, they do. However you can ask fro the charges to be waived providing you haven't gone over by more than £10 this month. I would call their phone service. No point going into a branch, they'll probably just put you on the phone anyway.

    If you don't want to be charged for the call, just call the current account sales line and press the option to discuss an account you already have.

    While you're at it, you could contact the sales line of a real bank and transfer your account to them.

    I can't believe you been on here so long and not learned from other people's problems. Santander just aren't worth the effort.

    I am pleased you have been been successful in getting the charges removed, and providing feedback on your "method", but I question whether it is sound "advice" for a consumer forum.

    *If* the Santander Terms and Conditions permit such charges (for £0.14 over, and I haven't examined the Terms and Conditions on the issue) then they do not need to "whistle" for the money, they just take it.

    Pmduk's response was much better "advice", but perhaps that is what you intended.

    They tried charging me £30 for going 2p (YES, TWO PENCE!) overdrawn a couple of months ago. :mad::mad::mad: I wrote a stinking letter of complaint considering I have a so-called "online" Visa Debit card which could've declined the charge I put through. They did waive the charges but I've not used the card or account since. In fact I need to close the account asap. Probably won't use it again. I don't trust Scumtandurr. :mad:

    This is why my main account is now with Barclays ;) I only keep it for the cheque book. (yes, I am antiquated, I do occasionally pay for things by cheque, mainly the book club at work)

    glenn, i have the same card!! Ridiculous, isnt it??? My Barclays card declines if I even try to go 1p over but Santander allowed it!!

    jalexa, there is no money in the account so they couldnt help themselves to my money ;) I am aware its not exactly sound advice but my exact words were 'I fail to see why I should have to pay £50 for going 14p over. Especially when I was not told on takeover of a variation to my account that used to permit me to go up to £1 over without charge which used to be the case with A&L.' I also pointed out I am on a DMP and do not have this sort of spare money and if they persisted with the unfair charge I would not be able to pay anyway.

    This was from the bank who were adamant they were going to charge OH £250 in fees. I checked this three times and each time was told yes they would take £250 and no way would they take a penny less. I calmly and politely pointed out to them that I had a copy of the amendments to the T&C's introduced recently that stated that the maximum they would be able to take in fees in any one given month was £150 and this was confirmed by a member of bank staff who was with me at the time of the call.

    They have the ability to fully wipe off the charges as long as you never went overdrawn more than £10 in your statement period (which sounds like you haven't from what you've said). So you can certainly get them wiped.

    Well, they could and it'd just run you into even further charges as they'd charge you for paying their own charges (because the money wasn't there), then they'd charge you the £5 a day unauthorised OD fee.

    Bottom line: If it's under £10 in that calender month, you're ok, if it's over, then you're snookered and not leaving any money in the account for those charges is just asking for aggro. :p

    I do

    If you have a arranged overdraft with them and your still in your overdraft and a cupple of pence you are charged 50p per day with them which is roughly around a tenner at the end of the month,

    If you know on the day how much the DD were for and could of retify the issues before they leave the account you have till that day your overdrawn to reslove it (Impossible to do just quoting what a santander agent told me) then the charges get waived

    If you have a Zero account-No charges

    However

    If you have gone over your overdraft allowance they follow the other big four and start rubbing their hands and letting the shareholders on the phone with codes of "We got another one to milk-that sort of thing excuse my humour i have to realise it does not work in writing"-anyways i beleive the fee is 35-50 pounds if you go over.

    Many of the people on here hate santander i know,I am one of them but since they ditched the Indian call center and set up more call centre in Bootle liverpool, Leicester and Belfast im feeling quite drawn to them again and had no issues so far with them.

    Hope that helps

    I don't in any way try to defend Santander. However its written clear as day that they will pay card transactions when there isn't enough money in your account.

    Just because you have an online card does not mean that they will not pay the transaction. It just means that they have checked your balance saw you don't have enough money and took the opportunity to make themselves enough money to by an extra bottle of champagne for the Christmas party.
    7.3 Unarranged Overdrafts
    a) Without contacting us at all, you can also request an
    overdraft by trying to make a payment from your current
    account
    , where that payment would:

    (i) cause your current account to go overdrawn, or further
    overdrawn, without an Arranged Overdraft in place; or

    (ii) cause your current account to go over, or further over,
    any Arranged Overdraft limit we have previously agreed
    with you, and in either case this is referred to as an
    Unarranged Overdraft request.

    b) You will automatically be treated as requesting an
    Unarranged Overdraft if you do not have enough available
    money in your current account
    , or enough unused Arranged
    Overdraft with us and:

    (i) you try to make a payment from your current account
    using your debit card
    or by cheque;

    (ii) you try to withdraw money from your current account;
    (iii) you make one or more payments from your current
    account against a cheque which is later returned unpaid;
    (iv) you try to make a payment against a deposit in your
    current account which has not been processed; or
    (v) you allow an automated payment, such as a Direct Debit
    or a standing order, to be processed on your current
    account.

    c) We may agree to give you an Unarranged Overdraft or
    we may refuse to do so
    . If we agree to your Unarranged
    Overdraft request, we will give you an Unarranged Overdraft
    to cover the amount of the withdrawal or the payment
    involved. Depending on your particular account, a Daily
    Unarranged Overdraft Fee or interest may be payable when
    you do not have sufficient funds in your account to cover
    the payments being made from it during the course of the
    day and your account is in an Unarranged Overdraft. Please
    see our Interest Rates and Fees Information for details on
    whether the Daily Unarranged Overdraft Fee or interest
    applies to your particular type of account.

    If it is less that £10 they will always agree. How nice of them.
