can you let them outside at 5mths?
thought they had to have been "done" and had jabs (which vets says is at 6mths)
must admit he does go outside but only in garden as he follows other cat out.

dont suppose any of you know how to stop a 5 mth old male kitten from pooing on the floor next to litter tray but not in it? driving me barmy
    !

emma, yr kitten probably doesn't like the cat litter you have put down. I had this prob too when i got my kitten last may. I tried various types until he was happy with it. He didn't like the sawdust one or the wood pellets either. the gravely one from tesco was his fav.
good luck with it and thanks for the thread about the cat flap. this is just what i am thinking about doing so the info was very helpful.

my kitten wasn't allowed out till he had his jabs. I got him chipped at the same time.
Then he was 'done' when he was 8months old so now he goes in and out at his leisure.

It is always useful to have a cat trained to a tray in case they have to be shut in for some reason (illness ,Bonfire night) You could try putting a little of what he has done in the bottom of the tray to give it some scent and then make sure the floor area where he has been has a good bleaching to remove his scent from there.

    Emma,
yes you do need to wait until the second set of jabs two weeks apart) but he is old enough now to have his jabs. Why on earth did the vet say 6 months? That's rubbish. it's supposed to be as soon as kittens have lost the protection from Mum ie when they are weaned so def not 6 months. Mine were done at 12 weeks and we could have done it a bit sooner.
Do you change the litter frequently? he might be trying to avoid soiled litter.

Emma, congratulations and good luck with the baby.

I sympathise with the litter tray problem. Our two girls were 12 weeks old and litter tray trained by the rescue shelter when we got them.

The little sods always waited until I had just cleaned the litter before using it. I am sure they did that deliberately. One of them was fine using it but the other, who has always been a daft cat, never got the hang of covering up her deposit. She would tread in her own poo every time so I had to watch her carefully and clean her paws regularly.

As soon as they had their jabs and could go outside I installed the cat flap and removed the tray and that was it. A blissful litter tray free life. 13 years later they are very much loved cats who entertain us daily.
