my oh doesnt demand a starter - or a dessert! he just wants a 'proper' dinner! Main course and lots of it! but as he prefers his in the evening and I find I cant maintain my wieght if I eat a main meal then - lol - he gets 'his' in the evening and I warm up the leftovers (or my portion) the next day for my lunch!

My friend starting making leek and potato soup for tea frequently the other year following a holiday and I asked her how she was managing to convince her menfolk that it was their meal, cos as well as a husband she has 3 teenage boys, and she said she was doing a 'smaller type meal' to go with it. I don't remember everything she dished up as a second course but I do remember that one time it was soup, followed by hot chicken and stuffing in breadrolls.

All I can say is thank the lord for my hubby. I put food in front of him, he eats it, he's happy and grateful. Doesn't matter if it's soup, jacket potatoes or whatever. Which is probably why our budget is doable.

I could quite happily live on good soup and a dessert, I can also quite happily eat leftovers a few days running but not my OH. For him soup is a lunch food, for dinner he likes a proper meal and it has to be something different each day. He will happily have jacket spud & salad for dinner though.

My OH is like this too. Soup would not be acceptable as a meal, nor is salad even if it comes with a big lump of cold chicken etc. To him, a dinner has to be hot, include a lump of meat and a pile of carbs like rice or potato. Anything like soup or salad is just a starter/side dish.

But then what is REALLY annoying is that he takes so long faffing about before eating his food, and then eats the meat last every time, that it is stone cold by the time he gets to it anyway. So what difference does it make?

My OH is the same, he'll eat whatever I give him, partly because he is so easy going where meals are concerned, but also because he can't cook so it's a case of eat what I give him or go without, lol! We mostly just have a main meal, never have starters and only rarely have desserts, but sometimes if we're not very hungry we will just have some soup and bread or cheese on toast.

As a bloke I would feel "seen off" if just served soup and a pud

Unless soup was some meaty, or veggie thick one, with maybe dumplings? Oh, that's a stew is it?

And unless the pud was steamed treacle & blobby custard maybe, you can keep you tinned fruit & ice cream

Otherwise a baked spud with grated cheese perhaps & salad is fine by me

  • Maybe you could try a more "hardcore" soup like a minestrone with pasta and stuff in it...? I've never tried soup and dessert with mine - we often have soup at lunchtime in the colder months. Jacket potatoes, choice of 2 or 3 fillings and salad goes down very well here. Fillings can be hot or cold depending on the weather.
