for those of you who like FF and it's add-ons, Opera has pretty much a similar suite of add-ons these days, so do yourselves a favour and try it (but not 11.50, use 11.10 or.11) .If you like adblock, try Opera AdBlock or AdSweep, both work well :)

    Hee hee.

Everyone above average? Not for the Redmond Borg - Resistance is futile you will be assimilated.

Playing with W7 the other weekend (HO87 Jnr had a free trial) was like finding yourself in a live version of the Stepford Wives.

Anyway, he's since chucked the disc and switched back to Snow Leopard as Lion isn't quite there and he can't run Dreamweaver on it. Mind you who said S. Jobs Esq doesn't have a plan for world domination? I'll happily stay with Linux - anything to avoid bloatware, ridiculous licence charges and having to dump perfectly useable but slightly older machines.

    Internet Explorer? Who he?
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

It's gotta be said, I think IE gets a bad press generally. IE7 is a good stable browser in the main with some nice features. 8 went off the boil a bit and 9 is..well...hhmmmm..

BUT, I don't get why firefox is so popular, TBH. slow resource hog, IMHO. Yesterday I did a comparison of latest FF, IE8, Opera and chrome on my testing lappy, will have to dig it out and post it. Each with 2 tabs open (homepage - google, and the techie board) Opera was quickest and used least resources, followed by chrome, IE and Firefox last - over 100meg used on 2 tabs !!!

Up until a couple of years ago I used IE6 for everything, and I sit at the PC all day for work, and then some more when I get home. Then I discovered Opera 7.something and gave that a whirl. Didn't like it at first as it was unfamiliar to me but it was fast - very fast in fact - in comparison to IE. Decided to stick with it and quickly began to like it, mainly due to the speed.

I tried Firefox but 2 things instantly put me off - 1. the appearance; big clunky bright buttons designed for little kids, 2. so slooooooowwwww. Granted, this desktop PC I use should really be in the Science Museum now but even IE was faster than FF, and that was without any add-ons installed. FF pretty much sends the CPU usage off the end of the dial with a couple of tabs on the go.

So it was back to good ol' Opera again until Chrome started getting a lot of press and I tried that. Lightning quick just like Opera, but install a couple of extensions and it turns into a resource hog like FF with the memory usage up at 500k. Also some annoying quirks with Chrome too, where it simply refuses to load some pages and when it does, the frames are all out of place and it often refuses to load images too whereas the other browsers load them fine. Also the non-standard url bar font and size which can't be changed annoys the crap out of me.

I had a brief play with Safari too but it's all just flash and no functionality so it was back to Opera again. Been using 10.51 now for a long time, Opera standard skin and the ad blocker app and it works exactly as I want. 3 moderately 'busy' web pages only uses just over 200k of memory whereas the same in FF would be more like 500k.

Why are you recommending a back release?
  • From the firs time I read the article, I already had a suspicion. Turns out it was a hoax and I was right! :)

THE STORY THAT FOOLED the world last week, that IE users are morons, was designed to raise awareness about problems with the software, according to the prankster behind it.

"My name is Tarandeep Gill. I am a computer programmer/web developer/entrepreneur. I graduated with a Masters Degree in Computer Science from Georgia Tech," says a recent post to the Aptiquant web site.

"I worked briefly before quitting my job to work on my startup, which is a comparison shopping website. I take 100% responsibility for this hoax."

The hoax, which by now is becoming annoying, had a message, but one that we suspect did not need to be told.

"The main purpose behind this hoax was to create awareness about the incompatibilities of IE6 and how it is pulling back innovation. So, if you are still using IE6, please update to a newer browser," adds Gill, causing us to wonder whether he keeps on top of news about the browser and Microsoft's plans for it.

"We got this idea when adding some features to our comparison shopping website, we found out that IE6 was highly incompatible with web standards. IE 7.0 and 8.0, though better than 6.0 are still incompatible with not only with the standards, but with each other too."

because the latest Opera,11.50, isn't quite as nice. The graphics of the menu etc bars look a bit too Apple (like itunes, safari, IYSWIM) and it doesn't seem to quite handle bookmarks as well as .10 or .11

The Apple look is the biggest thing though.......Apple software looks and feels bl00dy awful (again, IMHO) so I'm sticking with .10 or .11 for now :)

I decided to give 11.50 a go anyway before you replied as I'm getting a bit miffed with FF performance of late. It seems to be OK so far. I do get a strange whitespace over the top of the status bar sometimes but a change of page loses it??

I don't care about bookmarks as many moons ago I wrote my own php/mysql solution for those which I use as my home page so I never use browser bookmarks.
