Fencing quote double what I expected - Help please!

Just had a quote for fencing in the side and front of my house. Was expecting the quote to come in at about £1000 but it is £2150!!! It's highly probable that I was just on cloud cuckoo thinking it would be nice and cheap but I don't want to pay above the odds.

The job would be a 1.2 m pointed palisade fence with gravel board (mortised-joint construction). Total length of fencing is about 28 metres with two single gates. The quote also included the cost of relocating some steps.

I have no idea of labour vs. parts costs. I am a first time house owner and what it to all look lovely but don't want to be naive and taken advantage of. I do live in Berks, which probably doesn't help!

Any indication of if this is very expensive would be gratefully received!!!

Get some other quotes with comparable materials then you can see whether they are expensive. Sometime though the cheapest isn't always the best

That quote sounds reasonable to me - 28 metres is over 90 foot.
Whereabout in Berks are you located?

Ok - not close enough to me that I can suggest you get a quote from the company I used for my garden fencing. As others have suggested, get some more quotes for comparison.

I agree, that sounds reasonable, it is not really a 'simple' fence (gates and re-location of steps etc.). If you were going to do a simple 'cheap' overlap panel (6x6) fence with concrete posts, you would be looking at around £700 in panels/kickboards & posts alone (assuming Wickes prices).

OP - to put your quote in perspectiveI paid just over £2,300 for a 21 metre run of 6ft high close board fencing with concrete posts and a gate. This was about 3 or 4 years ago.

It seems to me that the op is disappointed that the quote was twice as much as a guestimate figure that the op had in his/her mind. On what basis was the expected figure arrived at. Anyway as someone has already said, get some more quotes so you make an informed decision.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • I had come up with the estimate based on the cost of materials required. The unknown factors were how long the job would take and what fencing labour costs are. The materials for the job add up to about £700, I just didn't realise that labour costs would be nearly double the material costs!

I'm having two more people quote for the job over the next couple of days so should then be able to see if it is reasonable. Thanks for all your replies.

Labour is always the most expensive commodity in these situations.

Using Charlton picket fence panels (machined finish) 2 Charlton gates to match, ironmongery, kick board, posts and postmix, the cost of the materials comes to £940.00 inc VAT. This would give you a top of the range fence. Expect to pay between £40.00 and £60.00 per mtr installed. Give Jacksons a call (https://www.jacksons-fencing.co.uk) With a 25 year guarantee on materials they are at the top end of the market and their price will give you a good indication of what the maximum cost should be for your area.
