Clean the carpet and the mattress with biological laundry detergent. When they're dry sprinkle a load of bicarb on them and leave for several hours before vacuuming it up again.

Sounds like your little fella is too young to start with the potty-training, and as has been mentioned, some are dry in the day-time and still wet at night. As soon as he gets into your bed, change him and pop him back in his own. Getting out of your own bed to sleep on the sofa is a slippery slope.

Agreed in full. It's been a long long time since I had this problem - like thirty years - but kids and pongs don't change :)

  • our daughter seemed to take two steps forward then 1 step back.

We would do well, think we were cracking it, then have a few weeks worth of accidents.

We were always consistent with out approach though, never getting mad or cross at her as we didn't want it to become a psychological issue.

We tried several different techniques, we had some good results, but the best one came from a reward chart.

What we actually did was to get one for her, one for mum and one for dad. Then each time we needed to go, we would tell her that we needed the toilet and encourage her to reward us for our potty training too!

We got them from Personalised Reward Charts and had them make them up with "Mum's reward chart" and "Dad's reward chart"

It must be a bit alien to a child that they are being told to change their routine, but they probably never see their parents doing it, kids generally learn from copying, so i think it is a good idea to involve them in everything

He is not ready for this.

You need to put nappies back on him. Especially at night.

Remember - it's not a race. When he's ready, you will both get through this and you will have barely any accidents.

    i agree with the bicarb

also my ds would also do the same when he had trousers and oants on and i tried boxer shorts. worked a treat. he is 'freer' (if thats a word :o )in boxers. i tihnk pants hold them in and ake them feel similar to a nappy

Just put his trousers on him and not underpants. My ds was dry at 3...but with only one pair of anything on him. He is hypermobile (what people used to call double jointed) and just didn't have the manual dexterity to remove two lots of clothes. A few people I spoke to at his nursery said their little people were the same. Stick him back in nappies at night. Ds wasn't dry until he was nearly 5 - he'll tell you when he's ready. The pull ups were no good for us. The boy is a skinny little thing and he just piddled out of the side of them.

Your house probably doesn't smell of wee. You do need to get him back in his own bed of a night though, seriously.
  • With regards to the potty training, I have a boy and a girl and they both took a full six months to be dry and then another couple of months after that to be dry at night. We have continued with normal nappies for nap time and bed time and I bought pampers disposable change mats (like bed maps but smaller) and made sure that if they were sat down anywhere the kids were sat on one of them, including in the buggie and car...saved me loads of mopping!

Star charts and mega praise helped both of mine although both pushed me to the end of my tether before they really started to get the hang of things. I think you ought to persevere but maybe consider nappies for sleeping. Personally I can't imagine anything worse than having the kids sleeping in my bed but if it is what suits you then at least you won't be waking up damp lol.

    Good Luck x

Our son's been out of nappies for a year and the last few months he's been having accidents, so it's a long slog sometimes. We've been giving him a coin to put in his moneybox if he does an accident free day (he just gets too engrossed in whatever he's doing and leaves it till he's almost jogging on the spot)

(NB re night time wetting I believe this is all linked with the little one creating enough of a certain hormone that tells the kidney to slow down urine production, so it's developmental)

I think if our son was doing this a year ago when we started potty training I would think about how he was coping with the whole thing and make a decision from there of whether to leave it for a few weeks. From speaking to friends it does seem to be more tricky for boys!

(FWIW I have memories of being very little and my mum telling me I needed the loo and I remember thinking "how does mummy know before I do?"!)

You may wish to speak to your HV for more support too

    Good luck

I'm really surprised at how many responses and good advice there has been, thankyou.

This is the 3rd time we've tried! he's been using the potty and toilet for about 3 months, but still has accidents and thats why I think it's not going very well - but feel like we've come so far if we stop now it will confuse him.
we do have a reward chart but he shouted at us when we tried to put stickers on it! it was personalised with his name and was a thomas tank engine one - i think he thought we were ruining it lmao! :rotfl:

we do give him lots of praise and he "shows" us too, I will get him a load of joggers as there have been a few times where he had accidents cos he couldnt pull his trousers down in time.
the pull ups we are using for times when we can't get to the loo/or where he wouldnt tell us eg when I took him to see cars on monday at the cinema. have put him in a pull up tonight and have also put a mat under him.
is there set amount of bicarb to use? I once used a tablespoon instead of a teaspoon in some baking and dont want to do the same here!

thanks again for all the help :j

    Good luck

my son loved breastfeeding and I had trouble getting him to stop so rang the HV for "support". she came round and basically told me that I was in the wrong and should just point blank refuse, but because he was over 2 he was quite strong and would just pull my bra down and latch on if i wasn't quick enough or when I was sleeping he'd "help himself" and I was finding it hard to deprive him of it.
she kept phoning and asking "oh hi how are you, have you stopped breastfeeding yet?" every week for about 4 weeks til I just told her I had to shut her up. that was last june, and she hasnt rang or visited since. I think as soon as she ticked whatever box she needed to she just gave up with us, so I haven't rang her either as I dont think she was very supportive at all, just made me feel like a useless mother.

Do you mean you can't sleep with your husband because he is too big, or because the 3 of you can't fit in the bed. If it is the latter than he needs to be put back in his own bed.

hi it's because the 3 of us can't fit in together, but even if its just me and my son its uncomfortable because he tosses and turns and sleeps sideways across the bed.

I know that he needs to go back in, when I try to take him back even if he's asleep he wakes up when I'm doing it or really soon after - its like he just knows! as my and my husband had to always be up for work and I had to be up for work and/or uni so we always caved in and just let him in with us. I dont understand why he doesnt sleep through though - I wear him out enough!
