Help my house smells!

We've got two kittens and two litter trays in a small terraced house and it stinks. The airfresheners make it worse, their trays are cleaned every morning and night and they themselves don't smell. We've got windows open where we can - what can I do? I'm thinking of old wives tales here- or the best cleaning products for removing cat poo smell.
Obviously I do love the critters but they don't half stink!

What cat litter are you using? How old is the litter tray?
Pets At Home cat litter tray wipes are awesome - I'm convinced they stop the litter tray smelling so much till the next time I clean it out.
My MIL is a cat breeder and has up to 20 cats at home with a few litter trays dotted about, her home doesn't smell, she uses CatSan, and renews the litter once a day, giving all the trays a clean once a week unless they're mucky.
We have one cat, scoop his litter 3-4 times a week, clean his tray once a week. Again we use CatSan and don't have a problem with the smell.
Perhaps some of it is what you're feeding them??0 -
We also have two cats and we live in a terraced house. We've tried all sorts of cat litter over the years but have settled on Catsan. It's expensive, but it really doesn't smell at all, even when it really needs to be completely cleaned out and changed it only starts to get a bit whiffy. And it needs to be changed less often than other brands. Definitely worth the money.
Our friends also have two cats and they use cheap stuff from Lidl. Now I love most Lidl products, but their cat litter is useless, and you can smell the litter tray as soon as you walk into their house.0 -
Sainsburys cat litter is pretty good and cheaper than Catsan. I switched to it from Catsan and didn't really notice a difference.0

We are using tesco value cat litter- I will buy catsan tonight to test the difference. We are using liners and cleaning the tray (with CIf) everyday. We are feeding the cats hills science plan biscuits and whiskers kitten food.
Should I be just taking the lumps out? They seem to destroy the liners so I just bin the lot every day- very expensive! If you aim for the moon if you miss at least you will land among the stars!0 -
Yes just take the lumps out!
Catsan doesn't 'clump' the way some litters do so you just need to take out the solid stuff and sprinkle some fresh litter in if it needs it. We don't use any liners, and we just clean the tray with lots of boiling water once a week, no detergents/bleach etc.
We did try the Sainsburys stuff but didn't like it at all. We found it got really smelly really quickly, and also because the grains are quite fine and light, it ended up being kicked out of the tray and walked all over the hallway!0 -
Oh yes we are hoovering and cleaning the floor daily:(If you aim for the moon if you miss at least you will land among the stars!0

You can get clumping cat litter and non clumping. Theoretically with clumping litter, when the cat has a wee, the moisture gets some of the wet litter to stick into a ball, so you can "seive" out the lumps of wee.
However, CatSan's non-clumping litter is much better to deal with and doesn't have any odour. Get yourself a bag of Catsan, and a scoop like a sieve and don't use a litter liner! Clean out the trays thoroughly first (I'm not sure if Cif is good for cats though, have you checked?) then have a go with the new stuff and see how you get on. I reckon you'll save money in the long run.
And try a packet of the wipes http://www.petsathome.com/shop/antimicrobial-litter-tray-wipes-by-pets-at-home-26545 they really are fabulous.0 -
Right so shopping tonight for catsan non clumping:)
I'm working from home and I've had to exit and work from the bedroom which smells like fresh air:( Not the best working environment! If you aim for the moon if you miss at least you will land among the stars!0 -
I use catsan too and it really does absorb the smells.. I clean any poo out straight away but as its only used as a night time emergency tray for our old lady it only needs emptying and cleaning completely once a week... the house never smells..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j
