Energy saving bulbs GU10 for kitchen & bathroom

  • I just got an led GU10 from TLC - compared to standard halogen's it looks very similar in colour tone (warm white) and although it has 3 LED's, it gives a pretty good light. I also compared to a megaman flourescent GU10 which was considerably 'bluer' looking as flourescents tend to be sometimes. They also stuck out by nearly an inch whereas the LED is the same size exactly as standard GU10's- if the megaman flourescents were the same depth then I'd probably use them.

    Here's what I got:

After my test I've decided to get the LED GU10's to replace my power hungry halogens.

38 degree beam angle, 3.7w and 190 lumens is very low power !

The majority of GU10 LED's will be at least 1cm longer than a standard halogen, MR16's should be exactly the same size as halogens.
  • I've heard good things about the Philips bulb, what do you think of them?

    Not great.

I have also just got a couple of the TLC 50watt equivilient LED lamps......they're not cheap at £17 each but do perform quite well and are just about good enough to replace the 50w halogens in the kitchen.

The warm white version I got take about a minute to get to their best, initially they're a bit greeny/yellowy for about 1 min but then do give what looks almost the same as halogen light and power.

You have to be realistic and not expect halogen performance from these LED lamps but all I can say is that they are much better than the cheapy multi LED GU10's out there and do offer a reasonable low power alternative. I'd suggest anyone interested in going into TLC and trying the one they have on demo (well they had a demo in Crawley) -

I'm still in two minds - they do work quite well and obviously much better on the consumption side but they cost a lot - like most greener options the initial cost often is not recouped by the savings they achieve.....GU10's LED purchase & running cost vs GU10 halogen purchase & running costs?

i know of a 7w LED bulb which is far better than 50w Halogens. In 12 years in the industry its the best LED Spot i have ever seen. Possible to get it with a 5 year warranty too.

That sounds good, perhaps you can share the details of this lamp?
