Energy saving bulbs GU10 for kitchen & bathroom

Options
Just moved to a house where they used 50W GU10 ceiling downlights in the kitchen and bathroom. I would like to change them to energy saving bulbs but dont know how the light output from 11W CFL bulbs will compare. Will the brightness and colour be OK? Do you need to add more energy saving lights to compensate? Any comments from those that have converted from 50W GU10s appreciated.

I dont believe LED bulbs will be powerful enough and was looking at Megaman 11W GU10 CFL bulbs. These bulbs will be longer so I may have to replace the fitting, but will investigate further.

If you are changing the fitting then Halers Evoled are excellent (LED). But are expensive.

There are after market LED bulbs but I don't know how well they do, but I would have thought worth a try before going to the expense of a whole fitting.

Do your research into lumens etc, there are quite a few recent treads on here that cover this so do a wee search.

I converted to the 11w megaman from gu10 50w.i have them in the lounge & they work really well. They give of a white light & i would say they light up the rm more than the gu10 so no need to add extra fittings. I got the dimmable ones (3 stage only) which is nice but not as much control as the the gu10. From memory there 6mm longer than the gu10

    Hello!

11 watt Megaman bulbs maybe too big for your fittings, as they are pretty bulky and long! Double check the dimensions!

I would recomend converting to LEDs though, as these use much less power and give a light that is warmer and closer to the light given by a standard halogen, i use these now in my bathroom and they look great!

u can get a softer light aswell in cfl but they dont give out as much light tho.a cool white would go well in the kitchen.they do look bulky but they are the same width as a gu10 & only 6mm longer.
    i have 6w led"s & they give off a good ligh (equal to11w cfl)t but they wernt cheap @ £22 per lamp & cfl were £13 p lamp
if you have to change the fitting your better of going for led to put in the original fittings

I paid a small fortune for GU10 CFL bulbs (not the Megaman), and they were a disaster. They were fine for a month or so, then became dim and/or failed. I didn't want to pay a lot for bulbs that would fail again, so I replaced the failed bulbs with cheap, ie dim LEDS, which weren't much better.

I bought these last week, though I appreciate the bobbly front won't appeal to everybody:

I bought the brightest, 10x80, white light bulbs, and I can definitely confirm that they are bright. Very bright. After my past experiences, I'm reluctant to recommend until I've had a year's use, but I don't think you need to worry about whether LEDs are bright enough. New from the box, they are.

These look nice, but I would ask one thing, what is the warranty, no mention of anything longer than 14 days money back guarantee and if you try to ask the seller a question, get the following response

    '
We're sorry we couldn't find an answer for you. Unfortunately, due to the high number of emails this seller receives, they aren't able to respond to your specific question right now. We suggest reviewing the item again to see if your answer is in the seller's listing.'

    Not great!!

Warranty? On lightbulbs? Never crossed my mind :o

And it probably should have done after the CFLs.

Yes, they're very nice now, and in fact the bobbles look quite good inside the shades, but ask me in a year if I'm still happy!

Yes I use the same sort, I don't think they look particularly bobbly once they are in the downlight fitting, I quite like the look of them now to be honest.

Only reason I asked about the warranty was that I tried lots of bulbs, most were poor quality, but the ones that were ok only lasted about 3 months, upon chasing the seller I was sold only 30 day warranty with UK, anything else had to be sent back to China at my expense.... no thank you!!!

Thanks for feedback, seems LEDs have improved. I am thinking of trying these http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/LTGU9W.html. No need to change fittings

Question which type of light is best for a kitchen - Daylight White 5300-5700k, and for a bathroom Warm White - 2500-2900K.
