I have a Madrid mattress made by La Romantica Beds. It actually has pocket springs with memory foam on both sides so that it can be turned.
I'm very tempted to order that mattress, I've seen it online for £419 which seems very reasonable. I'd really like to try it out in shop first but I don't know any shops that sell these, do you?

How do you rate it? Happy with your purchase? I've yet to hear a bad word about this brand.
  • hello, everyone.
i am intending to buy a dunlopillo mattress, cool factor is a main issue. any advice on that will be much appreciated!
    thanks

Seems most of the discussion has been about foam mattresses rather than latex. Maybe this is because latex isn't very popular.

I have telephoned several retailers who are Dunlopillo stockists (according to the dunlopillo website) but most of them have stopped stocking their products giving various reasons such as too high price and loss of quality. So I am now a bit reluctant to buy dunlopillo.

I have looked at a Relyon mattress which contains latex.

So, Tim, this is a question for you (have looked at your previous threads - I gather you are an expert!) - what do you know about Relyon Embrace (version 1475) ?? Any advice?
And thank you for your advice about coolmax - I was wondering too if it really worked or was just an advertising gimmick.
hello, wandaland, i am also intending to by a dunlopillo, from what i know of, the dunlopillo being taken over by slumberland, that is why they vetting out retailers and concentrate on luxury market.

but ...... if I am going to buy a LATEX mattress which hopefully doesn't rely on body heat to make it comfortable, then maybe it will be OK ???
hello, wondaland. did you buy the dunlopillo latex mattress? what is your verdict? thanks

    Hello Expesso!

I finally took the plunge and have ordered a dunlopillo mattress - it won't arrive for about 4 weeks. I will keep you posted.

I am risking the 'cool factor' bit. I have been told by several bed retailers that they sell dunlopillo latex mattresses in hot countries, so latex can't be that much of a heat problem.

I had got to the stage that I will probably feel hot on any mattress so I may as well feel hot in comfort. Plus I won't have to share my bed with all those dustmites!

They also sell reflex foam mattresses in hot countries, and they are very sweaty.

Latex is supposed to be the coolest of all the foams though.
  • I had a Dunlop bed in the fifties in the US and it was like sleeping on a cloud. It sat on an ordinary box springs. 30 years later it was going strong in my mother's guest bedroom - they will last forever if you cover them tightly from the air. It is air that makes them deteriorate sooner.

From then on synthetic foam came along and competed with this latex rubber by Dunlop. After a few years a really strange product came along that was foam but compressed weirdly under your body. This was pretty much rejected by the public. Later it was renamed 'memory foam' and actually found a niche in sales. Stick with latex.

Someone did post on MSE a while ago saying that they had a Dunlopillo mattress ages ago. They then replaced it with a newer one, which they found to be much lower quality. I don't know exactly how they have changed, but this does go with the recent trend for large manufacturers to lower quality in order to cut prodiction costs.

Dunlopillo is now part of the Hilding Anders group who also own Myers, Slumberland, Staples, Jensen, and many others.

As Dunlopillo are very very expensive, many people go for other brands of latex mattress. However you should beware as many are not what they seem to be. Some have only a very thin layer of latex in them, and sometimes this only covers a small area of the mattress. So if you go for a latex mattress that isn't 100% latex foam, then make sure it has a layer that covers the whole surface of the mattress, and is a couple of inches deep rather than latex foam bulked out with reflex foam. As long as the latex layer is a couple of inches deep, then you will get the best support from full size steel pocket springs/latex foam.

Latex foam is slightly cooler than memory foam, and the support they both give is similar.

Latex foam is actually made from a natural product as opposed to memory foam which is synthetic.

Memory foam is far cheaper than Latex foam.
  • We have had a Dunlopilo latex foam mattress for years and it has been really cool and comfortable. We replaced it recently with the new dunlopilo latex one and I would say that although it is comfortable etc the quality seems to be less.I am not sure why - maybe its the coverinK or the edges -it also seems to be a bit smaller -our king size sheets etc seem to be too big now. I think that the foam might be a bit less dense.

That does agree with what I have heard from someone else.
