Day out in York

I've just booked train tickets to spend the day in York with my 6 year old in August and i'm just after a few handy hints or ideas what to do. Also the cheaper the better.

Ive booked the york dungeon online so that has saved me £8 and I presume its not too far from the train station.

What else can we do? Was thinking either the castle or the viking place but would that be too much in one day?

Where are the good places to eat? Again cheap(ish) and cheerful or any what have vouchers. Is there a pizza express or ASK??

Any help would be appreciated

I'd recommend the National Railway Museum - frree, and only a few minutes walk from the station

  • The Viking Centre (Jorvik) is a must, interactive and good for a child (pre-book to miss the queues). The Dungeon is about 10 minutes walk from the station.

I live not far from York, the Jorvik centre is a big rip off.

Castle Museum is just the best, have a ride on the York Boat,

York is just the best, look up wherever you go, the architecture is just brilliant.

You just cannot get lost in York, theres a saying here, if you walk around long enough, you will end up back where youstarted from.

    Enjoy.........................

The Railway museum is great. We used to take our reception class for their school trip. The Castle museum is pretty good with lots to see, very dfferent from Jorvik.

I'd take sandwiches then go to Bettys for tea and cakes.

If you're at The Dungeons then there's either Pizza Hut or an independent italian (Silvanos) both almost adjacent to it. The independent place is excellent for lunch and certainly used to have a £6 or so Pizza + drink deal

National Railway Museum is free, my son took our 4 year old grandaughter a few weeks ago and had a brilliant time.

Take some food with you for a picnic, food and parking are really, really expensive.

Dont know what day you are going but Slug and Lettuce down by the river is 50% off on a Monday, have a look at the
website, join up for the newsletter and you get a token for £10 off a £20 spend.

Have a look at the York website for any offers, tourist bus etc.

thanks for all the help everyone. It appears the castle and the railway museum is a winner. I saw the offer on the castle where kids go free and it looks really good value. I am going on a monday so i'll look into slug & lettuce offer too.

Cant wait now, thank you :)
  • If you can get an Ask voucher the building Ask is in (former Assembly rooms) is really nice. Feels much more special than most pizza places.
MSE aim: more thanks than posts :j
