Data roaming

Options
I've recently spent a week on the isle of man, worried about charges for data i checked that my I phone 4 from Orange was switched to the data roaming off position which it was. While away i only used the phone to send 6 text messages, i didnt make any phone calls or use the interent or any app on the phone. I now find i've been charged almost £20.00 for data used, Orange say i used 12MB of data while away. when i said i had not used the phone the explanaition given was that applications can run in the background and update themselves. I cannot beleive this to be true, have i been riipped off ?

You were not roaming as you were in the Isle of Man which is part of the British Isles, therefore many apps were probably syncing in the background using the 12mb you have stated. Going abroad such as Spain would be classed as roaming, so to sum up no you havent been ripped off, just not educated enough on roaming. Hope this helps :)

The Isle of Man does count as roaming, it may be part of the British Isles but Orange don't have a network there so they use either Manx Telecom or Sure, hence it's classed as roaming. The billing system is automated, the phone will have used the data, all sorts of apps run in the background and update themselves

Not quite correct, The Isle of Man is classed as roaming as they have their own network, Manx Telecom as are the Channel Islands, Jersey Telecom.

Then I need some education as well.

Surely roaming is when you move from your home network - the one that you pay a monthly charge for. I would expect that the moment I moved out of range from my home network, I would not be able to receive data if I switched roaming off??

If I was in the Channel Islands, would that be roaming? Where is the cut off if you are right? The whole purpose of switching roaming off is to avoid such additional charges.

If you are using your phone in the Isle of Man and using Manx Telecom it is classed as roaming, its the same for the Channel Islands, although part of the British Isles, they each have their own network.

Surely this debate is a moot point as the OP states data roaming was switched off while he was over there. So even if they were roaming they shouldn't have been charged anyway.
Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug). ;)

I can explain, as I deal with this a lot.

If you roam in Channel Islands or Isle of Man, although you are roaming as far as the UK networks are concerned, the iPhone see's the Channel Island/Manx network network ID code which is identified as +44 which is the same as the UK. This is why the Data Roaming switch didn't work.

Go to Eire, EU etc, and the Data Roaming switch will work in the normal way.

This is why when Orange iPhones now roam onto T-Mobile you don't get the Data Roaming warning, whereas other smartphones will alert you.

Admittedly, none of the networks make this clear.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

The phone looks at the MCC/MNC not the 'network ID code' (which isn't +44, that's the dialling code for the UK).

Yes, such as 234-33 etc... Yes I know.

I was just dumbing it down ;)
